Setting Up A LAMP Server

  • Quote

Post by Crashed_Again » Fri Feb 06, 2004 10:39 am

Hello folks. I wanted to setup my desktop machine as a LAMP server so I could test some php applications that I'm writing. I'm very confused as to what exactly I have to emerge and what USE flags I need to use to get everything going. Of course I'm going to need to emerge httpd, php, and mysql but all these packages have USE flags that I'm not sure if I need or not.

Basically what I'm asking is if I wanted to install something like Postnuke what would I have to emerge and what flags would I need to set?

I know this is a very noob question but I'm getting a little mixed up here. Thanks in advance.

This howto should get you all set up.

Make sure 'apache2' is part of your USE flags.

So I don't need to add mysql support to apache via the mysql USE flag? Also that guide does not talk about installing mysql. Is mysql simply:

emerge mysql

?

no, you don't need to have a specific flag for apache. just emerge mysql. The 'P' in LAMP, be it PHP, Perl (or Python) is the 'glue' between the web server and database server.

I know that Perl requires specific modules to speak to SQL databases, using DBI. AFAIK PHP has this built in. You use the DB::connect command in your php widgets to do the talking.

Fairly sure you mean Perl widgets - PHP, assuming you have mysql support compiled in (USE flag), accessed the database through mysql_<many things here>.

In any case - Apache and MySQL exist completely separate from one another; so you only worry about those USE flags when dealing with Perl, PHP, (I guess Python too, if you're the masochistic type).

By widget I meant the stuff in the <?php ?> tags. Just a colloquialism, as opposed to any extra software component that is required. :)
