Having difficulty explaining bugs on Bugzilla - need help

  • Quote

Post by redblade7 » Sun Sep 29, 2019 12:15 am

Hi,

I am having great difficulty trying to explain two sets of bugs to the Gentoo team on Bugzilla. They keep marking all of them as duplicates when there are two sets of bugs.

I will try and explain things on the forum in hope that it will be a better way than Bugzilla, and that people can verify for themselves that there are two sets of bugs which are unrelated. I don't want to keep undoing the marking bugs duplicate as I already did this once and repeatedly doing it would make me an annoying troll, plus destroy my credibility if I was to report a future bug.

Both of these bugs are relating to icon themes.

"Bug A" regards a problem with icon cache generation. After installing a theme affected by Bug A, it creates weird problems installing future themes, with errors cascading into installation of future themes. This can be verified by installing a theme affected by Bug A, followed by any other theme.

"Bug B" regards a problem where a theme lacks icons in Plasma. This can be verified through systemsettings5. This is regardless of whether or not a theme affected by Bug A is installed.

Affected by Bug A only: nou-icon-theme
Affected by Bug B only: yasis-icon-theme, gargantuan-icon-theme
Affected by both Bug A and Bug B: nuovo-icon-theme

How to prove there are two separate bugs here:

1. Install nuovo-icon-theme, followed by two other themes which normally work. You will see both Bug A and Bug B. Be sure to remove nuovo and the two other themes before continuing.
2. Install nou-icon-theme, followed by two other themes which normally work. You will see the presence of Bug A but not Bug B, as Plasma settings will still have icons for nou-icon-theme visible and usable. Be sure to remove nou and the other two themes before continuing.
3. Install gargantuan-icon-theme and yasis-icon-theme. Then install two other themes which normally work. You will see the presence of Bug B but not Bug A, as while Plasma lacks icons for gargantuan-icon-theme and yasis-icon-theme, there are no errors installing anything, and only these two are affected.

If the Bug A and Bug B were duplicates:

1. nou-icon-theme would not have icons in Plasma. It does.
2. gargantuan-icon-theme and yasis-icon-theme would cause and/or continue the cascading icon-cache errors. They do not.

I am hoping someone here can verify that these are two different bugs and explain it better to the Bugzilla people than I can.

Thank you!

redblade7,

Your bug numbers would be really useful.

You can talk to the team in #gentoo-kde on irc.freenode.net.
You will need to register your nick before you can speak there. That helps keep spam down.

Neither of this is a KDE matter afaic, at least I have not been exposed to such bug reports. These themes are maintained by different people and they are not marketed as Plasma themes.

comment#3 makes sense for me, if it's your bug, i'll tend to agree it's a duplicate https://bugs.gentoo.org/695368#c3

(don't worry you won't lost any credibility, for devs, user have 0 credibility)

Expressing my pov of how "gentoo" devs see "gentoo" users is not related to "Other Things Gentoo"?

I think knowing this from start will help redblade7
You just want me to not express my pov because you don't like it?
Or you mean king attitude of devs in bugzilla deserve is own thread in gentoo chat?
Because from what i see just in this bug, comment#1 mark it duplicate without reason, it's after comment#2 that a valid reason was given... You see this "mark duplicate, i don't gives a fuck to tell user why" is speaking for me no?

Apologies for not including the bug numbers. The reason is that I conflated these two things at first in one of the bug reports, and I didn't want people to also be confused.

If not all icon themes are compatible with Plasma, then "Bug B" would not be a bug at all.

In that case, the following bugs would not be duplicates, but instead be invalids and should be closed (as invalids, not duplicates, as again this Non-Bug B has absolutely nothing to do with Bug A):

695366, 695368, 695372

The following two bugs are the same Bug A as applied two different themes, and thus should be open:

695362, 695364

EDIT: "695364, 695365" corrected to "695362, 695364"

redblade7,

Bug 695364 has had some work.
Bug 695365 is not a valid bug number.

Apologies, the two "Bug A" bugs should be "695362, 695364"
