Accelerated video decoding in Chrome?

  • Quote

Post by grant123 » Tue Apr 30, 2019 5:53 pm

Does anyone have hardware accelerated decoding working in Chromium or Chrome? I'm reading that it's supposed to work but I'm hitting dead ends.

about:gpu should contain an explanation as to if/why it's not working. If not, you might have to change a related setting in about:flags to force-enable it.

I'm on this hardware:

Does chrome accelerate decoding or just chromium? If only chromium currently then this makes sense.

What that page says doesn't matter, what matters is do you see a difference when you turn on/off hardware acceleration.

I don't use Chrome or Chromium, switched to Vivaldi recently from Firefox and I too have problems detected in that gpu page, but I can clearly see a difference when I turn on/off hw acceleration.
Try with this animation:

I just installed Vivaldi but how do you turn on/off hardware acceleration in that browser? about:gpu and about:flags don't work there.

But I think that fireworks animation is only testing webgl acceleration and I need decode accelerated.

Found the on/off switch in vivaldi://flags and somehow got rid of the accelerated decode errors in about:gpu in chrome but performance is still subpar on Netflix. All streaming video is perfectly smooth in Kodi and also on Amazon in chrome.

In Settings->Webpages you can turn it on/off

btw do you have chromium USE flag on ffmpeg ?
if yes then you need to replace the file that ships with Vivaldi

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/lib64/chromium/libffmpeg.so /opt/vivaldi/lib/libffmpeg.so

Actually you're right and I got it wrong completely, sorry about that.
I don't use Netflix, Amazon and didn't notice any problems watching HD videos, I thought it was using gpu, but now I compared it with Firefox and I see the difference in cpu usage, in firefox is as in Kodi and mpv, around 7%, in Vivaldi it's around 25%

I'll investigate more, I just recently switched to it.
How did you solved this message ?

Code: Select all

Video Decode: Unavailable

Tried Chrome and Opera and I don't have video hw acceleration there as well.
Only in Firefox I have it.
Maybe VAAPI works but I'm on VDPAU

I like Vivaldi but I think I'm going back to Firefox, even though I don't even notice the difference when cpu renders the video, it bugs me now.
Ah.

I'm not totally sure how I got rid of those errors. Did you enable #ignore-gpu-blacklist? That might have been what did it. But in my own experience here as well as what I've read online is that getting rid of those errors does not mean acceleration is actually working.

Do you think it's safe to say no one on Gentoo has hardware acceleration in Chrome/Chromium?

I think that in Linux there's no browser which supports video decode by gpu.
I got that by reading these days about it.
In my case firefox does use much less cpu when watching 1080p then chrome/vivaldi/opera, didn't try chromium, I figure they're all the same family.
I thought it was using gpu to be honest, I guess there's a way to actually see that but I don't know how to do it, didn't even try.
I read some articles how chromium can be patched to use vaapi.

Right now I'm back with Firefox and I removed all other browsers.

Yeah I saw that about the Chromium patch in other distros that enables GPU decoding:
