why is systemd-udevd on my system?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

systemd is cancer. I don't want anything to do with it and I specifically put USE="-systemd" in my /etc/portage/make.conf

I would hazard a guess you are wanting to use Gnome, which depends on systemd by default...

2 ways that you can easily tell what is pulling in a package, is that you can place the package in question in your package.mask, and see what package is complaining that you need systemd. Otherwise you can use equery depends (from gentoolkit) to id what depends on the package...

Look at emerge -pv udev and emerge -pv systemd. I strongly suspect you will find that is "vanilla" udev. Pottering assimilated udev into systemd after all. Resistance is futile.

Unless you swich to eudev, mdev, or static-dev.
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

Then RTFM. First paragraph. First link. You were given exactly this URL in the elog messages where you installed udev.

Ignorance of your system is not an excuse, we are not Ubuntu here

Yeah, I'm not using gnome... so udev has been infected? I do sort of remember something about that a while ago but I couldn't believe it. Thought they would have more sense. Okay. eudev it is, thanks.

We certainly aren't. When noobs ask questions on an Ubuntu forum they don't get snotty answers. You didn't have to answer at all, except to put somebody down for not understanding.

As of quite a while ago, upstream rebranded udev as systemd-udevd in various log messages. Its source is bundled into the systemd source distribution, but it can still be built as a separate program and used without installing systemd. I am not aware of any commitment by upstream to retain that independent status, nor any announced plans not to retain it.

The lead developer has, at any rate, made his opinion on the matter known. I've made it a point to use a forked version of udev since it was assimilated because of this.

I doubt we will see any actual sabotage to udev in the near future. Systemd has taken over every other major distro so it isn't worth the effort and we planned for it.

I was not aware he was so blatant about it, but I can't say I'm surprised.
