I had some problems with my NVIDIA card during installation. I now switched to the intel video card of my processor and plugged the monitor via VGA to the mainboard.

Running startx throws the error message

Somewhere you have some manual settings for Xorg because some are quoted in the log.

The Intel graphics should just work if your kernel is correct.

Move the manual settings out of the way, to say, /home/avitase/ so Xorg can't see them.

Post the new log if Xorg still won't start.

Ok. I removed all files from /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Still startx fails.
Maybe it helps to mention, that I ran nvidia-xconfig during my attempts to use the nvidia card. I removed the generated file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ but I don't know if there are other remnants.

I wouldn't suggest deleting everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory if you didn't put them there, but any that you manually put in /etc/X11/xorg.conf ...

One thing I was wondering is if you physically removed the Nvidia card or not? I know some motherboards/firmwares disable features of onboard graphics if it detects another graphics card inserted. This isn't the case for all boards, however.

However one thing to check to make sure, Xorg does seem to not detect anything if the KMS driver for intel is not built into the kernel. Double check in your kernel config to make sure that's enabled or moduled.

In either case for nvidia-drivers, make sure you disable nouveau in the kernel (or have it as a module that you can blacklist).

as you have intel in your VIDEO_CARDS
It means that after you added intel to VIDEO_CARDS, you didn't rebuild things to get the driver.

emerge -uDNav @world should offer to rebuild media-libs/mesa winh support for VIDEO_CARDS=intel and install x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel,
which is the driver Xorg says it can't find.

If you have nvidia-drivers installed, remove it meanwhile. Do the emerge outlined above, then post a new log.

I was thinking about that too but remembered on my i965 box that the xf86-video-intel driver was no longer needed:

video_cards_i915? ( x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel )
video_cards_i965? ( >=x11-base/xorg-server-${PV}[glamor] )
video_cards_intel? ( !video_cards_i965? ( x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel ) )

which means that if you specify i965, xf86-video-intel is not needed, and the modesetting driver is used instead.

Weird, isn't it? Completely baffled me why my i965 box insisted that I depclean xf86-video-intel...

I should mention that I did not specify i965 on my on-cpu graphics machine. The i965 was used for a true blue i965 chipset graphics machine.

Thanks both of you. x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel was indeed not installed, even though emerge -uDNav @world claimed to have 'nothing to do'. I installed the driver and now startx works as expected.

You still need VIDEO_CARDS=i965 to get mesa to build the right 3D bits, but the 2D driver is dead and waiting to be buried.

avitase reports xf86-video-intel is necessary for on-cpu graphics, implying VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965" is wrong, yet mesa still needs i965.

So should the correct VIDEO_CARDS is to omit "intel" ? That seems wrong, too.

If it helps to add to this discussion, my HP Pavilion with onboard graphics, hasthe VIDEO_CARDS variable in make.conf set to "intel i965" and it seems to be working. Once in a while I do get lines across the screen, persisting across some situations but never more than a second or so before going away.

I have not attempted any rebuilding of the packages relating to Video such as the ones mentioned, by others, yet.

Onboard or onchip (chipset versus cpu graphics)?

Okay, I just checked:
My HD4000 CPU graphics laptop: VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965" and xf86_video_intel NOT installed: WORKING
My G965 Chipset graphics desktop: VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965" and xf86_video_intel NOT installed: WORKING
My Q45 Chipset graphics desktop: VIDEO_CARDS="intel i965 i915" (yes a little superfluous) and xf86_video_intel is installed: WORKING ... I think this setup is a little wonky but portage is happy and X11 works...

So xf86_video_intel should not be needed to be installed for a working configuration.

For completness, what driver is in use or each system?

I guess the first two are modesetting as xf86_video_intel is not available.
The Q45 could be either modesetting or intel.

Glad that the problem seemed to get fixed, but can someone please clear up what is the purpose of software, xf86_video_intel? Is it for the client or server of X11 window manager on the intel based graphics systems?

And avitase, for consistency with past and future solutions if you have time to post the output of 'emerge --info' since it is generally considered helpful to see some of the variables set in portage when concerning with the problems (not specifically for startx, but for the video card and other portage variables that could posisbly have been conflicting or something like that) By the way, if you don't have time to do this, no worries. these issues will always arise.)

After inspecting the machines again, I noted my observations were wrong. I had noted my machines were --depcleaning xf86-video-intel and thought it was wrong before knowing about the modesetting driver.

So:
