Don't need, don't want CUPS [SOLVED]

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

I don't need printing support of any kind whatsoever on this particular computer. So how do I make this go away?

Code: Select all

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
 (see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by net-print/cups-filters-1.13.5::gentoo[postscript]
# required by net-print/cups-2.1.4::gentoo
# required by www-client/opera-45.0.2552.888::gentoo
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
>=app-text/ghostscript-gpl-9.20-r1 cups
Settings USE="-cups" worked on another machine, but it's not working on this one.

(There's not even a use flag for cups for Opera...)

Opera need cups as dependency, if you do not want cups remove opera (or create a ebuild without cups dependency).

Opera is a binary package, so you can't reasonably expect USE flags to offer much customization with it, the ebuild devs don't have a lot to work with there...

That said, it is possible Opera doesn't need cups to run, you could check run lddtree on it's binaries and see if any link to libraries provided by cups, and if not, you can alter the Opera ebuild as fedeliallalinea suggests, or simple add cups to package.provided, although this has the drawback of no notification if other packages want/need cups.

Other than that, yeah, just pick a better browser... :P

More elegant solution, I always forget package.provided

Beware that even binary software like this might try to load libcups.so for no reason and crash when you do that. I've had it happen with icedtea-bin in the past.

Yeah, it seems like the safest thing to do in the end was to just give ghostscript-gpl cups in package.use.

At least back in December 2014, the post Presto Opera version really did not like even starting up without CUPS around... so I quickly put the idea of trying it out away.

Did you see if things are still like that?
Kindest of regardses.
