Hi,
I just bought a Asus Xonar U7. I searched the internet before and it is stated that this soundcard works (pretty well) with linux. Now I plugged this thing in and of course nothing works.
What I did:
- removed old soundcard
- compiled snd_usb_audio (in kernel)
- plugged in Xonar (USB 2.0)
- rebooted PC

Result:
I have a Xonar sound card:

Code: Select all

aplay -l
**** Liste der Hardware-Geräte (PLAYBACK) ****

  Sub-Geräte: 0/1
  Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0
Karte 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], Gerät 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]

Karte 2: U7 [Xonar U7], Gerät 2: USB Audio [USB Audio #2]
  Sub-Geräte: 1/1
  Sub-Gerät #0: subdevice #0
But I don't have mixer controls for IEC958:

Code: Select all

amixer -c2
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right - Rear Left - Rear Right - Front Center - Woofer - Side Left - Side Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 127
  Mono:

Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: 0 - 2
  Front Left: 2 [100%]
  Front Right: 2 [100%]
As a result I cannot unmute IEC958 channel(s) and therefor hear no sound :(

Anybody any idea where to look ?

Hi,
I tried that but sadly still no IEC958 mixing option:

Code: Select all

lsmod
Module Size Used by
rpcsec_gss_krb5 20877 0
fuse 77671 0
snd_usb_audio 129386 0
snd_usbmidi_lib 18810 1 snd_usb_audio
snd_rawmidi 16379 1 snd_usbmidi_lib
ghash_clmulni_intel 4104 0

afir, there is no clear IEC958 option for USB-audio.
do you have pulseaudio? imo, that option can be found in pulseaudio controls.

Well, at least a mixer entry should be available otherwise I cannot unmute it.

Also this link says a mixer entry should be available: http://archive.is/wXgtZ

All my soundcards so far had at least a mixer entry for unmuting IEC958.

I solved it, but the solution is not obvious (at least to me):
You have to follow the description in the link I posted but ignore the fact that you have no mixer entry for IEC958. As soon as you modified the Alsa-USB config and rebooted the machine, there will be mixer entry in pusleaudio named IEC958. But the sound still doesn't work, because the output is still muted. Now if you open the alsamixer for the Xonar U7, you'll find an entry named "PCM 1" and this one is muted. Unmute it and voilá sound is working. Even the volume wheel on the sound card is working perfectly fine (if you don't passthrough of course).
