Kernel 4.7.0 nvidia

  • Quote

Post by ysbeer » Thu Jul 28, 2016 11:05 pm

I just installed kernel 4.7.0 but after rebuilding the nvidia modules i get error compile phase emake failed.

I am on my phone right now so i can not paste the log files because i can not startx

Question: is the problem on my side, or is it known fact that nvidia drivers, take some time to be upgraded by the nvidia closed source maintainers to work with a fresh new kernel upgrade?

There is a user patch floating around, but it usually takes a short time span before we release nvidia when a new kernel X.Y.0 is released.

Be patient, the nvidia developers will get to it, and then our maintainers will release it.

I usually play a game on wich i would like to go online again, so i am sorry to ask but how long would this timespan be? I guess i could wait a few days but if it takes longer i might go back to Gentoo untesting; if the nvidia ebuild gets fixed i guess i will be watching some t.v and not play my game, but for how long?

I do not mind using the patch only problem i can not starx, the nvidia driver seems to fail building on 4.4.6 too in my case, what would be the best option for me? (I only own one computer wich have no working X)

Is there a way to install the patch without a working x ?

I placed the text file in "/etc/portage/patches/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-367.35" and called it "kernel-4.7.patch"

After emerge nvidia-drivers emerge complains about "die "Failed Patch: ${patchname}!";

I also replaced the kernel-4.7.patch with "367.35" because emerge is trying to download nvidia-drivers-367.35-r1

What should i do?

This.

Anyways, if you have unmasked 367.35-r1:

1. Make a directory called:
/etc/portage/patches/x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-367.35-r1

2. put the patch in there, I called mine nvidia.patch.

I am using the last one in that thread (the 42 line one) with no issues right now on the computer I am on right now...

Thanks for all the great support !!

apparently the directory i put the .patch was fine, however i did had some errors in the .patch lines, correcting those, and emerging the x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers, installed them correctly and i am now running 4.7.0 kernel with 367.35 nvidia-drivers

Don't blame Gentoo. This increased maintenance burden is one of the costs you chose when doing business with nvidia.
