knotes in KDE5

  • Quote

Post by devsk » Sun Mar 13, 2016 7:36 am

I have been thinking of jumping to KDE5 for a while but what's been holding me back is lack of knotes (and some not so important plasmoids) in KDE5.

I use knotes heavily for tracking my day-to-day tasks. Its simple and convenient, and I am just burnt into it (think 10 years worth of notes)...:-)

But as per a senior person on this forum, knotes is already ported to KDE5:

Does anybody know, why is it not available in portage tree yet?

knotes is part of the KDE PIM suite, which so far has not been moved to tree because of lack of stability.

What do you mean by instability? Does it not build? or Does it crash? Does it kill everything running on the desktop?

Any idea on even an unstable ebuild making into tree anytime soon? Looks like knotes for KDE5 has been there since Aug last year....:( IMO, That's been too long!

It is mostly the akonadi/kmail part that is troublesome at runtime. Actually, now that I remember, the knotes part has also been more than a little crash-happy.

Until very recently knotes:5 was not packaged separately but part of one big kdepim:5, that has changed with 15.12.2 so there is some chance it could enter tree without the rest of KDE PIM. However, 16.04 also isn't that far away anymore which has many of the things that require ebuild/eclass hacks for a proper split, upstream.

However, what's wrong with using knotes:4? There is no 'lack of' knotes on a Plasma-5 system.

There is nothing wrong with knotes:4. I was wondering if I could avoid the mix.

Your chances are slim, unless by chance you really only need those applications that have already been ported. No meta ebuilds for you then. ;)

You mean there is never going to be a clean KDE5 install in Gentoo?

Is there a list of apps that have not been ported yet? Just to see if I am good with KDE5.

Are there any rough estimates on when the pim suite are going to be packaged in the main tree?

I am using kdepim for Plasma5 for some months and I don't see any problem with it. Well maybe one...I have to use kde overlay. It's only place, where is kdepim for Plasma 5. Dunno why it's not in main tree...at least masked if someone has some problems with it...

KDE Applications 16.08.0 is now in kde overlay, with KDE PIM in a state that may grant it tree inclusion, even if masked. Testing much appreciated!

Wiki on KDE PIM was beefed up in preparation: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#KDE_PIM
