i3status: Steam tray icon and alerts stopped showing up

After an update the steam tray icon stopped showing up, and alerts triggered by steam also stopped working (for example when playing Dota2 and a match is found it usually sends an alert that displays from the tray in the top right corner).

I'm not sure if it was a steam update or some update on my system, but steam is being launched with the steam_runtime. The window manager I'm using is i3, and other tray icons are working just not steams. I tried temporarily removing my i3status config file so the default settings are used to make sure it's not just a bug with my config file.

Also, I'm launching steam with LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib" since it stopped working completely a while back and someone posted this as the solution. But I've been launching it this way for a few months and the tray icon still worked before.

How can I diagnose this problem?

I have the same problem. I think it started when dbus got upgraded to 1.10, running steam from the command line I see a warning related to dbus.

I've downgraded and restarted dbus, Steam still doesn't have a tray icon...

If this had been working and now isn't (and you have already downgraded dbus to 1.10.6), I would do a emerge --update --emptytree @world. That usually solves my problems.
