Portage syncing not working?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Portage syncing not working?

  • Quote

Post by lonex » Tue Jan 26, 2016 9:15 pm

I'm curious, something seems to be up. I've synced my portage tree this morning and ran into an error described here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1037936.html

So I thought I'll just wait a little while and sync again. Which I did, but since that I've always got this message:

Code: Select all

>>> Timestamps on the server and in the local repository are the same.
>>> Cancelling all further sync action. You are already up to date.
Which is rather strange after over 10 hours... usually the tree changes much more often in my experience.
Another thing I've found is this, there also doesn't seem to be a latest snapshot:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572956

Anyone any idea what could be up? Or am I just paranoid? :)

lonex,

It looks like your are syncing against a single rsync server that's stopped getting updates.
You should really use a rotation, so each sync attempt is passed on to a random server.

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Sorry, I did not mention it, but I use the Czech rotation and changed to the German rotation once I thought there was a problem. Always that same result though.

NeddySeagoon ... I use rotation and have the same issue. I'm not using Czech, or German, domains and so it does seem like something is causing rsync not to be propagated.

best ... khay

For me, rsync.europe.gentoo.org stopped updating on monday. I've since changed to rsync.gentoo.org which updates fine.

OK, today it seems to be working again.

May we suspect there's something wrong with the one or the other commit?
Is the process of snapshot creation logged somewhere?

Using gentoo.osuosl.org and lug.mtu.edu/gentoo and nothing after 2016-01-24 found (using websync). At home using rsync, I had a new update this morning...

A lot of the mirrors in Europe seem to miss the latest portage snapshots, e.g.
  • http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/pub/Mir ... snapshots/
  • http://mirror.mdfnet.se/gentoo/snapshots/
offer portage-20160124.tar.xz as the latest.

A couple things...

1) the snapshot system screwed up and it needs a manual reset. They should be coming back up soon if not already.

2) There were some updates to the rsync tree generation scripts which caused some large updates and also some dead spots in the
mirror system. They should be returning to normal.
