New -upD system, fontconfig, & portage problem?

  • Quote

Post by wrc1944 » Thu Jan 15, 2004 6:25 am

Just tried to do a -upD system, and got the following. I guess I'm looking for some answer as to how serious this is, and/or what I can do about it- or should I just wait. I had just done complete system and world updates yesterday with portage 2.0.50_pre14, with no problems, but then I saw pre16 was out today so I did that first. It's hard to understand where the problem is- pre16, fontconfig, baselayout, or xfree.

Thanks,
wrc1944

Same errors with world, except at the end there is this, instead of the baselayou problem:

Yeah I'm getting similiar problems. They seem to have started in the last 24 hours. But its not only with fontconfig.

Code: Select all

root@kal-el ejfiii # emerge gentoo-sources
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r5 to /
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/eclass/kernel-2.eclass: line 432: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `}'
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/eclass/kernel-2.eclass: line 433: syntax error: unexpected end of file

!!! ERROR: sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.22-r5 failed.
!!! Function inherit, Line 1052, Exitcode 1
!!! died sourcing /usr/portage/eclass/kernel-2.eclass in inherit()

Code: Select all

root@kal-el ejfiii # emerge fontconfig
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) media-libs/fontconfig-2.2.1 to /
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/media-libs/fontconfig/fontconfig-2.2.1.ebuild: line 108: unexpected EOF while looking for matching ``'
/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/media-libs/fontconfig/fontconfig-2.2.1.ebuild: line 109: syntax error: unexpected end of file

!!! ERROR: media-libs/fontconfig-2.2.1 failed.
!!! Function , Line 1238, Exitcode 1
!!! error sourcing ebuild
I've tried blowing away /usr/portage and re-syncing but that didn't help. Anyone have any ideas?

I had the same problem. The output with --debug was a good clue though.

All I had to do was edit the ebuild and delete the last line which contained

Code: Select all

^L`
Looks like the ebuild has got a bit corrupted.

EDIT: fwiw I also had to fix the following ebuilds for emerge -Dup world

libdvdcss-1.2.8 - line 23 delete the "t[tab]" before "then"

libgnomeprint-2.4.2 - change RDEPEND "pkgcoonfig" to "pkgconfig". This reported evolution as the problem ebuild but I found it in the end.

The latest is in kernel-2.eclass which looks to be truncated so I'm just going to have to try syncing until I get a clean one I guess. :x I suppose I might be lucky and not have to refix the previous ebuilds.

There is no ^L` at the end of my fontconfig-2.2.1.ebuild file. Instead it has the following, but the very last line has an additional square box of dots right before the last ` symbol, that doesn't show up when I cut/paste into the forum. I'll try deleting that last line anyway, and see what happens.

May be something related to the rsync mirror troubles. Try `emerge --sync` again may help.

OK- removing that last line (although different from yours) worked for emerge -upD system- it now shows all updated (as it should be), and no errors:

mymachine wrc # emerge -upD system
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating system dependencies ...done!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, for emerge -upD world, I now get this:

mymachine wrc # emerge -upD world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies |/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: /usr/portage/media-libs/libmikmod/libmikmod-3.1.10-r1.ebuild: line 47: syntax error: unexpected end of file

!!! ERROR: media-libs/libmikmod-3.1.10-r1 failed.
!!! Function , Line 1290, Exitcode 1
!!! error sourcing ebuild

aux_get(): (0) Error in media-libs/libmikmod-3.1.10-r1 ebuild. (1)
Check for syntax error or corruption in the ebuild. (--debug)

!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy ">=media-libs/libmikmod-3.1.6" have been masked.
!!! (dependency required by "media-sound/xmms-1.2.8-r3" [ebuild])

!!! Problem with ebuild media-sound/xmms-1.2.8-r3
!!! Possibly a DEPEND/*DEPEND problem.

!!! Depgraph creation failed.
--------------------------------------------------------
When I just do emerge -up world, I get this:

mymachine wrc # emerge -up world
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!

Seems like the -D option for deep dependencies causes the problems. I've never run into these "syntax error: unexpected end of file" errors before! Any ideas, other than doing another sync, and seeing if it was just a corrupted emerge sync download on a few random ebuild files?

I've got mine all working now too :)

I had to delete kernel-2.eclass to make emerge sync give me a good one. At least emerge -Dup world completes anyway.

I just did a fresh emerge sync, and all emerge/portage problems are instantly resolved, so I surmise my problems were caused by a bad download. Probably others with these similar recent problems should resync.

I got a new mirror (automatically) this time. Before, when the problems occurred, I was only getting a "Bishop" mirror in Canada, and IIRC, it was an older system with only 10 users allowed, and obsolete hardware, and I did have to do multiple attempts to even get connected with emerge sync. I guess this makes a difference sometimes- probably more than we might think.

Here's the mirror I got this time.
