there are a couple of sites I use that inform me that my flash player is not the latest version, and content won't load. is there a way via portage (or recommended way outside of portage) to update the player?

Adobe discontinued updating the linux flash player several years ago (beyond security updates), and iirc even those security updates are coming to a stop soon. The easiest way to view the sites with flash, is using google-chrome and maybe chromium (after you copy the pluggin from google-chrome over). No, the pluggin from chrome will not work in firefox.

You can update the flash player, check this link:

P.D : I use Mozilla Firefox without problems.
Details fueled any investigation ...

Thanks, that's about the 20th security update just this year on their buggy crap released 3 years ago.

@dweezil, thanks, I had not heard of pepperflash.

>=www-plugins/chrome-binary-plugins-43.0.2357.81_p1:stable google-chrome

So that's a backdoor way to get more closed source binary crap from Adobe.

I'd really like to keep this off my system. It's a shame that no one has come up with a FOSS replacement. AFAICT gnash is still of little practical use.
Linux, because I'd rather own a free OS than steal one that's not worth paying for.

I tried freshplayer. it's sometimes a little buggy and works a bit slower but good enough anyway.

freshplayer, it seems, is just a wrapper to convert PPAPI to NSAPI , you are still running Adobe's crappy security garbage code ( via Google if that increases your confidence :twisted: ).
