another problem with newer kernels

I have deleted this post from a similar topic below, since it will probably be dealt better with by itself.

I have a laptop (Dell d620) that works fine with an older kernel (gentoo-3.12.13), but won't successfully boot anything after that. It is running x86 with an Nvidia card using the nouveau driver).

I see all of the boot messages, but as soon as X starts, the display goes completely black, and while I can still ssh in, I can't really do much else with no display. :)

The X.org logs are virtually the same between the kernels (the working kernel has ten more lines at the end):

This is really frustrating, and any help anyone can give as far as diagnosing (and remedying) this would be greatly appreciated.

This sounds like the system is detecting the wrong backlight control by default. If you can ssh in, try poking at things in /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness to see if anything can get the screen to turn on. There may be 2 different entries there (one like nv_backlight, and one like acpi_backlight). Quite likely, one will work, and one won't. If setting a value in one of them turns the screen on, there should be a kernel command line option that will 'fix' it's behavior, and reporting it to upstream will make it work by default.
