Beat you to it! Here's the new link. I thought about that from my experience using dialog in shell scripts.

Hmm. That wasn't as informative as I'd hoped. Could you install just gentoolkit and then report the output of

Code: Select all

equery depends virtual/perl-Module-Metadata-1.0.19
please? (You can use wgetpaste again, if you like.)

There is nothing to paste. It says "These packages depend on virtual/perl-Module-Metadata-1.019:" and returns. Nothing depends on it.

Hmm again. Let's try some piecemeal updates:

Code: Select all

eselect profile set 1
emerge --update @system

OpenRC blocks it now. Here is the output.

Okay, this is a known issue with the Portage dependency resolver right now. It should be able to solve this block but it doesn't right now. Run

Code: Select all

emerge --oneshot openrc
emerge --update @system

I know I am going to give you a heart-attack, but that doesn't work either.

Also, i grabbed the stage3 from the link below if you want to know where I got it from.

Ugh. The above was wrong. I meant to ask for

Code: Select all

emerge -1 udev-init-scripts
If this fails, add the --nodeps option and run again. If successful, try the @system update again.

Which one of those? I think that's what I used last weekend, though.

I had to add "--nodeps", but it worked. I then ran the command mentioned above to update the system and it is now updating. I will post back once it finishes. In the meantime, what has happened to make this mess of dependency-hell? I am assuming portage got an update and a few packages have issues with it.

We don't have a diagnosis yet, but some subtle issue with the Portage tree is likely (in addition to the aforementioned issues with the dependency resolver).

Alright, fair enough. I used the stage3-amd64-20141204.tar.gz file.

Expand to the rest of the potentially out-of-date @system set dependencies:

Code: Select all

emerge --update -deep --changed-use @system

That appears to work, but it wants to pull in all kinds of junk I do not want. I ran with "-a" also and told it not to update. I then selected the KDE profile and ran the same command. It did not report any blocks or errors. I then tried it with @world and it appeared to be OK also. Should I now proceed with my install as normal?

Unfortunately, all of that junk is part of the @system set (or its dependencies), so you've already got it (or, at least, already depend on it to build).
The_Great_Sephiroth wrote:Should I now proceed with my install as normal?
Yep. ;)

Edit: Well, one proviso. I still think you should do the @world update before proceeding with the install. It won't really waste much time, if any. It's always better to install new software on an up-to-date Gentoo box.

Well the @system update was over 1GB of downloads with the normal/default profile set. With KDE it was monstrous. This is why I install in a specific order. I will share my bash script tomorrow, but needless to say, I do NOT install everything KDE has to offer as I do not need it.

Oh, and the @system update has almost entirely new packages. Only a few rebuilds/upgrades.

It wouldn't've been had you done the @system update before changing the profile. All those extra USE flags bring in optional dependencies. Regarding KDE, you know about kdebase-meta, right?

Yeah, I use startkde and then pick exactly what I want. Here's my package list, as promised.

Code: Select all

Live CD Phase:
gentoo-sources linux-firmware
genkernel sys-boot/grub
syslog-ng cronie logrotate

Services to add:
syslog-ng - default
cronie - default
sshd - default

Once in the system:
gentoolkit <pcmciautils (only for laptops with PCMCIA)> pciutils usbutils app-misc/screen ntp sudo ftp openssh-blacklist dosfstools ntfs3g fuse-exfat exfat-utils ppp
smartmontools nbtscan dialog pbzip2 microcode-ctl cpupower iw wireless-tools acpitool <acpid (shell only installs)>

xorg-server mesa-progs foomatic-db-engine foomatic-db-ppds

kdebase-startkde polkit udisks networkmanager-openswan networkmanager-pptp networkmanager-vpnc networkmanager-openvpn alsa-lib alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-plugins samba
  kdeadmin-meta kdeartwork-meta kdemultimedia-meta kdenetwork-meta kdegraphics-meta kdegames-meta kde-base-artwork kdebase-cursors kdeplasma-addons k3b firefox-bin
thunderbird-bin gimp gimp-arrow-brushes gimp-help audacious kdenlive kdesudo firewallbuilder filezilla xsane kaffeine konsole <synaptiks> kde-base/dolphin kwrite powerdevil
adobe-flash upower-pm-utils p7zip ark filelight kcalc kcharselect kdf kgpg ktimer kwalletmanager superkaramba sweeper kfloppy kremotecontrol networkmanagement colord
mediainfo dvgrab <rawtherapee (for photography buffs)>

libreoffice

codeblocks virtualbox

Services to add:
udev - sysinit
microcode_ctl - boot
cpupower - boot
ntp-client - default
consolekit - default
lm_sensors - default (run sensors-detect first)
cupsd -default
samba - default
alsasound - default
xdm - default
This works great for us and seems to be stable and fast. Note that Code::Blocks and VirtualBox are only installed on specific systems.
