ati 4200 switching to open source drivers [solved]

Post by Mgiese » Fri Jun 20, 2014 2:50 pm

hi there,

Code: Select all

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series]

i worked with an old xorg-server prior to 1.12 and closed source drivers by ati

that gave me a lot of blocks(and amd says there drivers should work no longer with cards below 5000 series), in order to resolv them, i uninstalled ati drivers and intend to use opensource.

what do i have to do ?

more specifically :

what do i have to put in make.conf (VIDEO_CARDS) ??

what do i have to put in xorg.conf (ati or radeon) before this has been FGLRX

what package do i need to get DRM (3d hardware) support ???

i hope someone has got some answers ;)

thanks a lot

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon

That should tell you how to set up the kernel, xorg for radeon opensource driver.

I do have two 4200 integrated GPU's but I only use one of them with a terminal so cant say I have any experience realy. I have installed ubuntu on some machines with ATI/AMD radion cards but well dont count realy. I have installed the binary ati drivers back in the day.
I use nvidia for my gentoo machines that needs good graphics with the closed binary driver.

I used a similar guide for my Matrox G450, tough no longer supported at all in MESA and newer Xorg servers it was to some help to me.

http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Hardwa ... tion_guide

Pretty much any guide for gentoo can be found using www.google.com or www.startpage.com

EDIT and the opensource drier is radeon so thats what you put in VIDEO_CARDS.

thanks a lot. considering advices in these guides helped and accelerated the process of switching a lot :)

only thing i found missing in those guides was to do a : "eselect opengl set x11" (before i had missing 3d hardwar support)

The guides probably assumed you did a fresh install where x11 probably is default. Also the ebuild for any vga driver usually suggest that you need to do that switch after emerging it so you might have mist reading that.
