so today I was emerging @world and got a new kernel on the way, I followed this guide: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Upgrade step by step and eventually couldn't get to a working environment.
so after a bit of trial and error, my upgrading procedure yielded me a working environment albeit there's no vmlinuz or config-3.X.Y nor System.map-3.X.Y files inside my boot directory.
Can someone please tell me how come this be? are those files non important? and most importantly what's the vmlinuz file is for, if the OS can still boot without it?
furthermore I've noticed that the vmlinuz file is created by the make install command, yet the Gentoo installation guide (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/h ... t=1&chap=7) does not mention this command while initially installing the kernel..
Thanks in advance for helping me understand how my Gentoo system works
