Masking Gnome 3

Consolidating "masking gnome 3 issues into this thread for now. Made sticky. --pjp, 2014.01.08
Unstuck by request of a developer, as it is now obsolete. -- desultory, 2015/04-28

Gnome-3.8 is now stable but I wish to continue to use Gnome-2.32 on several of my systems for the time being. I have been trying to mask gnome-3.8 but can't seem to solve issues with the packages.

Code: Select all

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

gnome-extra/evolution-data-server:0

(gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-3.8.5::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-3.5.3:= required by (gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.8.4-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

  (gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-2.32.3-r3::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    <gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-3.6 required by (gnome-extra/evolution-webcal-2.32.0::gentoo, installed)
and

Code: Select all

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy ">=net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.6[introspection]" has unmet requirements.
- net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.8::gentoo USE="consolekit dhcpcd gnutls introspection nss ppp wext wifi -avahi -bluetooth -connection-sharing -dhclient -modemmanager -resolvconf -systemd -test -vala"

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    exactly-one-of ( nss gnutls )

The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
    modemmanager? ( ppp ) exactly-one-of ( nss gnutls ) exactly-one-of ( dhclient dhcpcd )

(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.8.4-r1[networkmanager]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gdm-3.8.4-r3[gnome-shell]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-2.32.1-r2" [installed])
(dependency required by "@selected" [set])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])
My Package Mask

Code: Select all

>=gnome-base/gnome-3.6.2
I have added -systemd to /etc/portage/make.conf USE section.

What packages do I need to mask to block the installation of gnome-3.8 and systemd.

TIA.......... :?

You may want to take a look at your world file for any gnome items that will pull in upgrades.

gdm pulled in a whole bunch of 3.8 for me .... not having it there keeps it at 2.20.11 without it updating or needing to mask it

3.8 going stable is quite a bomb shell.

Searching my world file gave me some good hints, but I had to use trial and error.

I use KDE, but like Evolution for a mail user agent.

With gnome 3.8 requiring systemd to replace openrc and udev, I'm not going to do it.

My mask list is now pretty big.

It seems I will have to migrate away from Evolution, unless gnome migrates away from the systemd requirement.

Complete update on the Gnome2 box. First I changed the profile from desktop/gnome to plain desktop using 'eselect profile`. The gnome profile kept tried to bring in gnome-common-3.7.4 even though I had it masked. I had made the following additions to /etc/oertage/package.mask

This is a compendium of blockers that I found in two posts in this forum. I added sensors-applet.

It seems to be working.

Depending on exactly what packages you have installed you may have to add another mask or two, but it's a good start.

Edit to add: eventually I expect the same thing to happen to gnome 2 as to kde 2/3, it will disappear unless someone creates an overlay.

I've started another thread, "HowTo mask gnome-3.8" which might help. I'm sure it's neither complete nor comprehensive, but it works for the three deskside systems at my house. Feel free to post suggestions.

I don't actually use gnome, just some gnome packages that I happen to like. So I was quite unhappy when last Sunday the updates started changing my system into gnome/systemd.

if you need to reinstal gnome 2, use this file with a desktop profile:
/etc/portage/package.mask/package.mask.gnome3

Code: Select all

i think the Gnome3 + systemd developers are infected by Tablet-Cellphone-Android Virus

SO i switched to

Masking gnome-3 entirely? (For Gnome2 users rudely awakened)

  • Quote

Post by eccerr0r » Mon Dec 16, 2013 7:24 pm

Gnome-3.6 was unstable and people had been using udev just fine with it, up until gnome-3.8 requires systemd.

However gnome-2.6.32 was stable and didn't need systemd, and now has been updated to gnome 3.8 which is an even bigger jump than from gnome-3.6.

Has anyone been able to clean up their use flags/masks to get a stable gnome-2.6.32 install once more, or will this be deprecated soon anyway? :(

Edit: changed title

You mean Gnome 2.32? I expect it'll go away. And from what I've seen in portage, I don't think masking gnome3 is being made easy. I had the same idea, but it would lead to pretty unwieldy /etc/portage/package.* files.

The best option is to switch to a plain desktop profile, get rid of everything gnome and look at alternative desktop environments, or roll your own. There's easily more than a dozen useful window managers out there.

I switched to the mate overlay and am keeping some gnome2 and some gnome3 components. The package.mask file has 6 lines, and could probably be smaller if I got rid of gdm. package.accept_keywords had some 30-odd lines added for mate, that's about it.

Whoops, yes Gnome-2.32.

Yeah it will be quite a mess to mask. Though it may end up with a lot of blocks I wish real max version requirements were annotated in the ebuilds to automatically stay at a certain version.

My current worries: I am actually using Evolution and wonder what kind of a mess it will be if I switch to lxde. It's working just fine right now, including sync with my N900 so I wish I could keep it that way...

I guess I could keep one machine or a VM with gnome2 but it will be a pain to maintain that machine.

I finally got one VM running systemd, sort of... it seems very flaky so I'm hesitant putting it on my "production" machines just yet.

Masking gnome-3 entirely ? : My 2cts :

1/ I'd prevent 3.8 by copying the old 3.8 mask in my /etc/portage/package.mask
2/ And prevent 3.6 by running stable.

BTW, I did not try, I do not run Gnome.

That looks like a really good start. I kind of figured a huge mask list is going to be needed. That splitup of all the gnome-games was kind of unexpected. Hmm...

[Edit]

Tried it, and looks like more is needed, despite not having 3.6 unstable enabled...

I thought the profile was supposed to do this: isn't that the point of a systemd profile, after all?

I'd have thought the gnome3 profile would inherit from systemd, and things would be masked elsewhere, since they clearly cannot run without systemd, and the profile was put in place to ensure that systemd folks could set whatever crazy stuff they liked, especially wrt vendor lock-in, without affecting the rest of us.

No, I'm not even worried about systemd at this point. I'd like to keep gnome-2 but the problem is that in the gnome profile, gnome3 is now stable so it will pick this up in updates. Gnome3 will then get systemd which is yet a different problem.

If its not enough then you could try masking the packages listed in the last package stabilization list.
This is how I usually do in order to mask any stabilized kde-4.X.Y with Y!=5.

OK, a little bit of editing is going to be needed.

If you're looking to stay on GNOME 2, here's my package.mask. There are likely duplicates since I grabbed two different lists a while ago and then added some more when 3.8 hit stable. You may or may not need to tweak the list and, keep in mind, GNOME 2 will likely be leaving the tree at some point. Further, this list may need to be updated every time a new package hits the system since the GNOME devs upstream chose to keep the same library names while breaking backward compatibility. You may wish to consider moving to Mate, as I have done, which is essentially GNOME 2 with the library names changed to not conflict with GNOME 3.

This may help with Evolution: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ev ... e_Of_Gnome.

I haven't had much luck with package masks like saellaven's. Sorting out the blockers was a nightmare.

See this thread http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-97 ... ight-.html which addresses both Mate and keeping Gnome 2. I have done both on two seperate machines, but I never used evolution, just cursed it's long builds.
