Xorg ignores monitor settings in xorg.conf after update

Some recent update has broken my Xorg so that it no longer uses my (old but good crt) monitor to its full capabilities and instead falls back on a very inferior default. Instead of 1600x1200 at 100 Hz I'm getting 1024x768 at 60 Hz (and eye strain).

Among other things, I tried downgrading xorg-server a notch, but it didn't fix the problem. Trying to cycle through the modes with ctr-alt-+ or ctr-alt-- doesn't have any effect.

Another thing that occurred to me is that the console seems to recognize my monitor's capabilities even though Xorg now doesn't. The console appears to be using 1024x768 (though I'm not sure where to check for the exact value) but I'm not experiencing that painful 60 Hz eyestrain.

The Intel driver does not understand these options.

I suspect your minitors EDID offers 1024x769@60Hz as the first EDID mode, so thats what the automatics use.

PreferredMode and DefaultModes aren't Intel driver options at all. They're basic xorg.conf options that I have in the Monitor section of xorg.conf like they should be (according to man xorg.conf), and I don't understand why they're now being passed to the Intel driver.

I installed read-edid but didn't get any useful information.

BTW, one of my boxes with Intel graphics requires video=LVDS-1:d in kernel command line, otherwise it defaults to a wrong output (resulting in lowest resolution and inability to read EDID).

I'm suspecting your kernel config, methinks it goes wrong in KMS level.

I haven't changed my kernel config lately. I'm still using the 3.1.5 kernel because it's been working fine. Anyway, I checked and in my .config I have:

CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y and
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y

Those were what you meant, right?

Not sure, but there may be something interfering with KMS in your kernel. Anyhow, my Intel box was working fine, too, until some upgrade (do not remember which one) forced me to disable digital output of Intel chipset - and it is even not physically present on this motherboard! This is what I needed video=LVDS-1:d for. Mitä perkele?

Anyway, my console is just fine like how it used to be so I don't think this is a kernel issue. At the moment the console is graphically superior to the graphical user environment, which just feels wrong...

I discovered that I apparently do have the modes found too, they just aren't being used properly.

xrandr --output VGA1 --auto

fixes the issue. I still don't consider the matter solved properly though, as I shouldn't be writing that thing in the virtual terminal every time I log into the GUI. This is just a stopgap solution.
