Portage + Nix? Portage vs. Nix?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Portage + Nix? Portage vs. Nix?

Recently I heard about the Nix package manager and I'm rather fascinated. Words like "functional" and "declarative" sound really sexy to a Haskell programmer like myself, not to mention the whole idea of an unbreakable system.

I just started reading through the Nix manual. I heard you could install Nix in your home directory and run it from there, so I thought I'd give that a try on my Gentoo system. Was just curious if anyone here had played around with that. Also, I was wondering: how difficult would it be to add nix-like functionality to Portage, or come up with some kind of integration of Nix+Portage?

I would be interested in getting guix running as a user on Gentoo. It could be a nice experimentation overlay (for installing in the home dir).
