emerge gentoo-sources fails on Virtualbox Windows7-64 Host

I am trying to install gentoo on as a guest on virtualbox.

After doing emerge gentoo-sources it downloads it, installs patches, has the image ready in /var/ and then I get the error.
Several portage related messages and "Cannot allocate Memory" at the end
Is there some special things to consider when installing gentoo as a virtualbox guest?
Any more information needed to establish what's wrong?

thanks.

Same problem here, anyone has a clue ? I'm trying to install Gentoo 64 bits on a virtualbox guest, on a Mac OS X virtualbox setup.

I am having the same problem. I install x86 Gentoo to VirtualBox running under Gentoo AMD64, and every time I try to emerge gentoo-sources in a chrooted environment, I get "Failed to install sys-base/gentoo-sources-3.2.12" error. No other errors appear during the installation.

Interestingly, when I tried

Code: Select all

ebuild gentoo-sources-3.2.12 unpack
ebuild gentoo-sources-3.2.12 install
ebuild gentoo-sources-3.2.12 merge
everything installed without errors.
Hu wrote:What is the output of free -m?

Code: Select all

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 248 245 3 0 20 161
-/+ buffers/cache: 63 184
Swap: 0 0 0
I wanted to write that increasing virtual machine memory size from default 256M to 2G helps, but I was mistaken. It does not.

Update: Somehow it stopped failing after I installed app-portage/gentoolkit.

Hi all,
Same here except that I am installing on a laptop with only 256MB of memory. The exact same oom message appears and the installation is terminated.

I am installing linux-3.6.3-pf inside chroot jail.

free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 240 126 113 0 81 11
-/+ buffers/cache: 33 206
Swap: 244 53 190

I have installed gentoolkit, but again no luck in installing the kernel. Any pointers are appreciated.

I have removed -pipe from make.conf CFLAGS to make gcc consume less memory.

Thank you!
-Nik

By allowing more swap all 3 phases went fine. Sorry for the noise.
