Stage 3 tarball fails to unpack

  • Quote

Post by Dodec » Sun Jul 22, 2012 7:00 pm

I have just downloaded the July 11 version of the stage 3 x86 tarball from the Georgia Tech mirror site, and was given the error message "tar (child): stage3-*.tar.bz2: Cannot open: no such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now" when I tried to unpack it as outlined in the Gentoo Handbook, with the command "tar xvjpf stage3-*.tar.bz2".
Is there another way to unpack the tarball or download it to a place where the computer recognizes that it exists?

ashlyw42,

With your root mounted at /mnt/gentoo do the following

Code: Select all

cd /mnt/gentoo
wget http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/releases/x86/current-stage3/stage3-i686-20120710.tar.bz2
wget http://www.gtlib.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo/releases/x86/current-stage3/stage3-i686-20120710.tar.bz2.DIGESTS
md5sum -c stage3-i686-20120710.tar.bz2.DIGESTS
tar pxf stage3-i686-20120710.tar.bz2
The md5sum checks that your download was not corrupt. (I think md5 is still supported)

Thats the 32 bit stage3 The amd64 64bit stage3 is older. That tar command is silent. Use vpxf if you want to see progress.

If you fail to mount your root at /mnt/gentoo, the tarball will unpack into your RAM.

Are sure your in the right directory?

try ls /mnt/gentoo/ you should see the tarball. Next try pwd you should get /mnt/gentoo/ if you don't use cd /mnt/gentoo to change to that directly. If you did not see the tarball, download it again. tar will not search to computer for the file, it just looks in the current directory.

EDIT: I see I was beaten to the post.
First things first, but not necessarily in that order.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.

NeddySeagoon: I followed the commands you posted and used the vxpf option, after which the computer spat out approximately 12 million lines of code (I guess when it says "verbose", it really means "verbose") and finally gave me another blank prompt, so I'm assuming that means it worked. Thanks!

ashlyw42,

Yes and Yes.
Tar listed all the files that it processed.

Lol. You had to set the real filename but not a mask.

Wrong. Wildcards work just fine, so long as you're in the right directory and the tarball is too. Even the Handbook tells you to do it that way. Besides, it's less characters to type.
