[solved]eix-update stuck

  • Quote

Post by pd1986 » Mon Jul 09, 2012 6:35 pm

Hello, I installed eix. After compilation. I tried running eix-update, but it is stuck at this step "Reading Portage settings" and lasts for more than 40min.

Could someone please explain this to me and tell me what should I do? Thanks.

Hi,

I cant tell what's wrong with this description, but maybe you could try strace

Code: Select all

strace eix-update 2>~/strace
So you can tell where eix gets stuck.

You can read the strace file like this:

Code: Select all

watch tail ~/strace
(you can add -n30 to tail a larger output)

Thanks, I did what you proposed, there are some messages but I don't understand at all. voilà the message:

Code: Select all

munmap(0x7fc4065b0000, 5577) = 0
open("/etc/make.conf", O_RDONLY) = 3
fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1107, ...}) = 0
mmap(NULL, 1107, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, 3, 0) = 0x7fc4065b1000
close(3) = 0
open("/usr/lib64/gconv/gconv-modules.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3
fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=26244, ...}) = 0

close(3) = 0
it stuck here.

Hi,

That output seems normal. Could you try and comment (#) out the layman and local overlay in /etc/make.conf
and run eix-update again?

If there isn't a directory called /var/cache/eix. Then that is most likely a problem.

Are you running eix-update as root? You should be.

Code: Select all

big_daddy froyo # ls -l /var/cache/eix/
total 5600
-rw-rw-r-- 1 portage portage 5718951 Jun 11 20:30 portage.eix
big_daddy froyo # eix-update
Reading Portage settings ..
Building database (/var/cache/eix/portage.eix) ..
[0] "gentoo" /usr/portage/ (cache: metadata-md5-or-flat)
     Reading category 41|156 ( 26%): dev-php ..
/var/cache/eix is an installed directory by the ebuild.

Please run

Code: Select all

equery files eix
equery is part of app-portage/gentoolkit.

Re-emerge it if it does not have that directory in the files list.

Yes, as root. I can't run eix-update without root permission.

/var/log/eix isn't in the files list

I have re-emerged it many times. There is still not this directory

Does it involves USE flags? because I only had "nls" when I emerged it.

The /var/cache/eix directory exists only since eix-0.25.1. Please put app-portage/eix into your /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords file so that you emerge the current version (which should be eix-0.26); USE=nls and nothing else should be fine. If the problem does not vanish with eix-0.26, try with USE=-nls (or at least LC_ALL=C): The last output of your strace suggests that eix-update is trying to report some message and for some reason is stuck when looking up the translation.

I did what you said: upgrade eix to 0.26. it doesn't work ether, then set LC_ALL=C. Problem is still there. However, strace returns more:

Please put app-portage/eix into your /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords file so that you emerge the current version (which should be eix-0.26); USE=nls and nothing else should be fine. If the problem does not vanish with eix-0.26, try with USE=-nls (or at least LC_ALL=C): The last output of your strace suggests that eix-update is trying to report some message and for some reason is stuck when looking up the translation.
I did what you said: upgrade eix to 0.26. it doesn't work ether, then remove nls flag and set LC_ALL=C. Problem is still there. However, strace returns more:

Good luck

pd1986,

Grasping at straws here, try mounting /var/cache/eix to tmpfs with mount -t tmpfs none /var/cache/eix and try it again :?
Good luck

Check the dependencies with

Code: Select all

emerge -pv $(equery g app-portage/eix-0.26|sed -e 's/\[  [0-1]\]//'|cut -d: -f2|while read f; do ! [[ -z $f ]] && echo =$f;done|xargs)
The last thing would be to emerge gcc and/or glibc :?
Good luck
