Is it common to have a lot of packages that fail to compile when using emerge --update -deep world?
Everytime I do it I'm always over whelmed with complications.

No, I run ~amd64 and have very little problems with compiling, with stable portage tree I won't expect any.
I'd suspect some kind of a hardware problem, thunderbird may need lots of memory. The most helpful thing in such cases is usually build log, you should wgetpaste it (it is probably too long to paste it here).
BTW, TWM FTW!

I've used gentoo on multiple machines, and everytime I've had problems with it. Is there something wrong with my /etc/make.conf or something?

Thanks for any help/advice.

You have had a lib update and did not revdep-rebuild the appropriate library. emerge xcb-utils libxcb then you will be able to continue with your build.

Thank you. I realize that I should have figured this out myself.
