[SOLVED] media-video/parole -- no image

  • Quote

Post by aramis_qc » Wed May 02, 2012 4:48 pm

I run Xfce4 4.10 and media-video/parole-0.2.0.6 is installed. Application can open .avi. It plays sound but doesn't show image. gnome-player plays same .avi without any problem. Must be one or many plugins missing. How to fix it ?

Being a .avi file odds are that gst-plugins-xvid is the missing piece.

:)

Seems to be something else. xvid had been installed without fixing the issue.

Must say that parole just works fine when running Xubuntu 12.04, Ubuntu 12.04 or updated Debian Wheezy including debian-multimedia repository.

Then you could try to play that video file from the command line with mplayer and on the output look for something like "Detected file format". Once you know which codecs this video file requires just install the corresponding gst-plugin-* packages.

Well !

mplayer outputs :

Code: Select all

Ouverture du décodeur vidéo : [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
libavcodec version 53.61.100 (external)
Unsupported PixelFormat 61
Unsupported PixelFormat 53
Unsupported PixelFormat 81
Codec vidéo choisi : [ffodivx] vfm : ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
Sound and image are rendered. That's something wrong with parole. I'll submit a post to Xfce forum.

The .avi file has a mp4 video stream. Then media-plugins/gst-plugins-ffmpeg (which I saw is missing on your system) should enable the decoder for the gstreamer based apps like Parole. IMO, this has nothing to do with being XFCE or any other DE, you just need to install the appropriate decoders on your system.
Maybe you probably want also to enable the ffmpeg USE flag globally, to activate the use of ffmpeg capabilites on all applications that can use them.

Great lexming !

I thought I didn't need ffmpeg because of presence of libavcodec.

Thank's a lot.

Parole now works just fine.

Before I mark this issue as fixed, I must uninstall gnome-player and its dependencies just to make sure everything's still fine.

Everything's back on the rails. All works fine and gnome-mplayer and dependencies removed.

Once more, thank's !

ebuild of parole should force ugly, bad, good and ffmpeg plugins.

The parole maintainers respect Gentoo users and leave installing wanted codecs to them. Not everyone needs or wants ffmpeg and the others. Parole will pick up whatever is installed without rebuilding just fine.
