Scorched Earth :) My Long lost favoritest game ever.

Scorched earth came out when I was in Jr. High. I think if I look hard enough I might even be able to find the old 700k floppy it was on. Here is the question though, I emerged xscorch..... and I can't play it. What is the executable file's name? It's certainly not xscorch or scorched3d. Also do I have to run it on a server or can I run it in kde? Because I have no idea what to look for. Thanks :)

i've not tried installing any games in Gentoo yet, but experience with other distro's has shown that many games are installed in /usr/games (or possibly /usr/local/games), which is not typically in one's PATH. try looking in those directories...it might jump out at you.

should be under /usr/bin.

check your PATH variables and/or reemerge xscorch.

p.s. - if you have the original scorched earth, try it under dosbox! :P

The user you are running the program as probably has to be in the "games" group.

The binary should be:
/usr/games/bin/xscorch

Funny, I found the scorched3d command /usr/games/bin/scorched3d. I can start the games, configure the game, but cannot play the game. :( Do I need to have any server running or be connected to my lan at all?

>>> /usr/games/bin/xscorch-server
>>> /usr/games/bin/xscorch

These files were created by the ebuild. I created a local server and connected an extra client to start playing. For some reason I could not click an "Ok" widget in order to play vs. AI.

Or... Uhmm... just tried playing without starting a server. It works. ^^

Add /usr/games/bin toi your PATH & add your user to 'games' -group (important). I also found Scorch again 2 weeks ago. First I played xscorch, but it wasn't so good than the original scorch.. so I installed dosbox and Scorch runs now like a dream. It's great! "The mother of all games" :D

FWIW Scorched3D is not the scorched earth you remember.

However as far as getting the game to start up correctly, I had issues when I was running X in 32-bit colour. It would flash and then crash and burn. Other OpenGL games exhibited the same symptoms on my system... 16-bit GL sure is comparitively ugly, but at least it works.

Ha, this made me find my old DOS version and boot into Windows (I know, perish the thought, but for this it was worth it) and give it a shot. Trying to play that game now on a modern machine running XP made me wish for the days of the "Turbo" button.

Trying to change your angle by a few degrees is impossible. Maybe if you click it fast enough it will go around 362 degrees for you, but you have to have lots of luck.

On the other hand for some reason I was getting free money, so who needs to aim? Death Heads for everybody!

Try emerging dosbox. I've gotten things to work rather well using that.

Though, I've not tried Scorched Earth yet because X-COM, X-COM 2, Master of Magic, and Master of Orion all had me distracted.

TheWhiteKnight: I had the same problem when I first installed scorched3d. If you click on "Change display settings" and select "no GL extensions" it seems to resolve the problem.

If this doesn't help you might want to check out the forums on www.scorched3d.co.uk as well.

Hope this helps!

Come to think of it, if he hasn't solved the problem by this point he never will...
