Kernel not recognizing your hardware? Problems with power management or PCMCIA? What hardware is compatible with Gentoo? See here. (Only for kernels supported by Gentoo.)

i still can't use the hdd :/
i can't read it at all, no way to read the partitions, create partitions or whatever

dmesg tells me at the moment i/o error, sector 0 device not ready and that it can't read the boot sector.

i already tried to unload modules, load them again, restart hotplug, turn the hdd on and off, nothing helped. turning it on and off, dmesg tells me that the usb device isn't accepting the new address. plugging it in another usb port gives me sometimes usb device not responding, giving up.

is anyone out there who can help me take the last hurdle?

Have you already tried to mount it???
If not, read then the man-page of mount first: man mount

This should be moved from Documentation, Tips & Tricks

It can be something with your kernel configuration. Are you sure you have the same modules that you have when using Knoppix? If it is a FAT drive, you'll need VFAT support too.

Does it use SCSI emulation to access the drive?
