Leaving the .so files in non-portage package managers

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

Leaving the .so files in non-portage package managers

I have question regarding leaving .so files needed for system rebuild. One of Gentoo developers stated that >=portage-2.2 leaves such files until rebuild and marked the bug as WONTFIX. However is such behaviour mandated by PMS (I cannot find anything about that)?
I've probably left my head... somwhere. Please wait untill I find it.

According to PMS the .so gets removed and in fact needs to be removed to be picked up by revdep-rebuild or cave fix-linkage. As long as you still have the sources for wget this isn't an issue, just reinstall it first.

Portage-2.2 isn't stable and probably won't be stabilized anytime soon.

Thanks. I took the liberty of reopening the bug.

Fortunately, even though I had not have sources I had the browser opened. In worst case I would bring the files from other computer but I guess it is not the point.

Leaving an .so around means the user needs to run "revdep-rebuild --library soname" respectively "cave fix-linkage --library soname" and manually remove the .so afterwards. I'm not sure which one is more annoying.

Either way, keeping the sources of installed packages is good practice. Use "eclean" or "cave print-unused-distfiles" to only remove sources you no longer need.

I have small disk space so I clean files regularly. That is not problem on desktops but still might be problem on laptops (when I have dual boot).
