howto disable virtual console switching with windows key

Post by potenzial » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:35 pm

Hello,
I recently encoutered a very annoying problem.
I'm using windows key + space to show the command run screen from krunner but every time I hit the windows key I'm switching out of the Xserver.
Is there any way to disable the switching with the windows key?
I already set windowkeys="no" in the keymap config but no success ...

Weird, because I use CTRL-ALT-F1 thru CTRL-ALT-F7 to perform console switching.
Alt-F1 upwards switches between my Virtual Desktops, using Fluxbox.

The windows key has no such effect, for me. In fact, using fluxbox, I have my windows key bound to do all sorts of useful stuff, when hit in conjunction with another key.

It sounds like your GUI environment has bound the Windows key to 'chvt 1' or similar. (chvt 1 will switch to virtual console 1, leaving X).

Check your GUI environment key bindings.

To get the keybindings in X session

Code: Select all

xmodmap -pke | less
To disable console switching in Xorg configuration

Code: Select all

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "DontVTSwitch" "true"
EndSection
written in a file named like /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/dontvtswitch.conf should work. But then no access to the virtuals terminals from X. This file have to be delete to recover thems after X restart.

Logicien,
All very fine if you use X remapping.
If you use Windows manager mapping, such as fluxbox ~/.fluxbox/keys for the windows manager 'fluxbox', then the mappings do not show up using the method you described.

lyallp, I tried Logicien's method and it worked. I am user of Xfce 4 and use the keyboard shortcuts by xfce tools.
