Easy way to remove audio from .mov files? [Solved]

Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Easy way to remove audio from .mov files? [Solved]

  • Quote

Post by clytle374 » Sun Nov 13, 2011 5:54 am

Got a bunch of videos taken from an iphone(quicktime .MOV). I want to remove the audio from them. Been looking around and can't find how to split the files. Seems like this should be an easy task.

Thanks
Cory

ffmpeg likely should be able to do it. Perhaps a frontend such as avidemux could be of some help? I have not tried playing around with mov-files for a looong time, probably previously with windoze so I can't say for sure, but, they should seem to be able to work with them.
Kindest of regardses.

I can't seem to get avidemux to remove the audio, does make it easy to change the format though.

I'm installing mplayer now to give it a try.

Thanks

Can't believe I forgot that mplayer function. Might indeed be the most simple way to do it heh...
Might want to look into mplayer2 as well, it's what I use mainly though I can't remember right now why I switched to it from mplayer. ^^;

As for avidemux, you can set 'None' for the 'Audio source' from the menu Audio -> Main Track... and then even though the Audio part in the GUI still says 'Copy' or whatever, there should not be any.

All the stuff I've forgot is downright terrifying :?

After using the mplayer method, Totem gives me a "Could not determine type of stream." error and mplayer says

Code: Select all

mplayer joplin1.mov
MPlayer SVN-r33094-4.5.3 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team

Playing joplin1.mov.
Invalid seek to negative position!

Exiting... (End of file)
Neither play video.

I'll try avidemux again.

Thanks

Thanks for the tips on using avidemux2_gtk, it worked great. Added it to the application menu so I can find it again. Hopefully though, next time I won't be running my mouth when we're filming.

Thanks

Right, the dump command dumps raw video which might not be very useful (for example a quick test with an AVI that has video compressed with AVC dumps the video OK, but the framerate becomes variable and it plays a 1 minutes 52 second video in less than 10 seconds, and actually mentions that negative position as it does for you but it does still play the file, all the time showing big negative numbers for the position in the terminal like so V:-9223372036854775808.0 as well as in the OSD of the player, and the results surely vary due the compression method that was used).

Basically an ffmpeg command line would like do this perfectly but I would have to study it first because I always forget and it is such a monster that I have not properly jumped in to it to remember what I learned heh, but if avidemux works, that's great. ^^

That makes sense. I know what you mean about ffmpeg, I had used it in the past to re-encode videos for dvds and the command was crazy long.

Thanks again, marking this as solved.
