Help with creation, editing, or playback of sounds, images, or video. Amarok, audacious, mplayer, grip, cdparanoia and anything else that makes a sound or plays a video.

Lost sound :(

  • Quote

Post by zgredek » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:08 pm

Recently, while playing with variuos options with my microphone I think i broke some settings on my soundcard...

The command after which it stoped working (copied from the log) is:

Code: Select all

ecasound -B:rtlowlatency -b:256 -f:s32_le,2,44100 -i:alsahw,0,0 -o:alsahw
Now, i'm unable to play any sounds via audacious for instance...

Strange thing because:

Code: Select all

ecasound -i tone,sine,880 -o alsa
plays just fine (but quietly).

How to rewert the changes and make it work again?

Code: Select all

lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)

Thank you for any help

Check what alsa says. aplay -l. alsamixer. See which alsa module is loaded and which parameters are used. Read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt

Sorry, I've never used ecasound, so I can't say what that command would do, but it makes sense to check alsa settings anyway.

I don't know if I'm of any help, but I noticed that the recent upgrade to gentoo-sources-3.0.6 silenced my speakers on my desktop box with an Intel sound card:

Code: Select all

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller
A downgrade back to 2.6.39-r3 solved the issue for me. I've double checked this and the kernel version is the culprit.

I upgraded the kernel using my regular procedure, including a make oldconfig over the previous .config file and answering the popping questions. What amazes me the most is that I did the same on my laptop but I found no problem regarding sound (I don't recall right now its sound card, although I'm positive it also needs the snd-hda-intel module but with a different sub-selection).

Maybe there's something broken or incompatible between 3.0.6 and our sound cards?

Thank you fot all the ideas, however none of them helped...

v_andal,

Code: Select all

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
alsamixer works just fine, all the channels are at 100%.

urcindalo,
I'm still using 2.6.x and the same kernel version was used before. Everything worked just ok.

Here's a lsit of loaded modules:

Ok, so how do you explain the fact that:

Code: Select all

ecasound -i tone,sine,880 -o alsa
produces a sound (tone) through alsa?

Plus, the same modules were loaded before the crash and no kernel update was done in the meantime.

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#2
Codec: Realtek ALC883
Address: 2
Vendor Id: 0x10ec0883
Subsystem Id: 0x1458e601
Revision Id: 0x100002
No Modem Function Group found
Default PCM:
    rates [0x560]: 44100 48000 96000 192000
    bits [0xe]: 16 20 24
    formats [0x1]: PCM
Default Amp-In caps: N/A
Default Amp-Out caps: N/A
Thank you for your time :)

If you have read the whole thread you would have seen that without that, the last entry by user joehni says he was having sound but one channel wasn't working, until... http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-63 ... ml#6371123

If you want the technical explain why it work without it for some users, why it doesn't for others, why some users "think" it work for them while they in fact have an half working setup... ask alsa devs not me.
