Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Not sure.

revdep-rebuild first
unmerge hal first

If neither works, you can always mask pciutils-3.1.8.
AMD FX6100 CPU, 16 GiB RAM, OCZ Vertex 3 SSD
ASRock 970 Extreme3 motherboard with S/PDIF audio
Galaxy-NVidia GeForce 8800GT video card, Cyber Power CP550HG USB UPS

You can mask pciutils-3.1.8 which will fix things in the short-term. Long-term, you will find that software will depend on tools that don't work with hal, or require programs that conflict with it.

If you desire to keep using deprecated software (hal, kde3), it might be easiest to never update?

Code: Select all

localtux ramaswamy # equery depends hal
 * These packages depend on hal:
app-misc/hal-info-20091130 (>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.10)
localtux ramaswamy #
does it mean hal is not used by any other packages?
can i remove it and other kde3,gnome-2.32,xfce4 will all work ok?

Code: Select all

localtux ramaswamy # eix --installed-with-use hal
No matches found.

im not sure but i think kde3 relied on hal, gnome-2.32 and latest xfce4 versions dont for sure.

Its easy to see what breaks in case you remove hal, you can backup the package ( with quickpkg), uninstall both hal & hal-info and see what breaks with revdep-rebuild:-)
In case the system is unusable afterwards you can just install the backup you made with emerge -K.
Having hal installed will be a problem in longterm so you will have to bite the bullet sooner or later.

cheers

i don't know the command for backup of the pckages hal and hal-info

also hal and hal-info are not there in portage any more. once i uninstall i don't think will be able to emerge it again

Code: Select all

localtux ramaswamy # quickpkg hal --include-config=y
 * Building package for sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r4 ...                       [ ok ]

 * Packages now in '/usr/portage/packages':
 * sys-apps/hal-0.5.14-r4: 503K
localtux ramaswamy # quickpkg hal-info --include-config=y
 * Building package for app-misc/hal-info-20091130 ...                   [ ok ]

 * Packages now in '/usr/portage/packages':
 * app-misc/hal-info-20091130: 31.8K
localtux ramaswamy #

you already did that, quickpkg will create a tarfile of the installed package in /usr/portage/packages.
Install it again with emerge -K.
how would i restore it in case necessary?
all deleted ebuilds from portage can be found here :

http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewv ... entoo-x86/

hal ebuild can be found here : http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewv ... ideattic=0

there are also a few overlays that still have some hal ebuilds, check here f.ex. http://gpo.zugaina.org/sys-apps/hal

cheers

before today's update i unmerged hal and hal-info removed mask of pciutils upgrade
update world went alright.
had to restart due to power outage.
restart was ok and thermal and cpu freq controls are all working ok.
seems hal was not used in mounting other partitions and sound card or other hardware.
kde3 did not complain any hal missing
revdep-rebuild says [ 100% ]

* Dynamic linking on your system is consistent... All done.
anyways i will keep the backup hal and hal-info for sometime, incase if i get complaints of hal missing or so

thanks gringo for all guidance :) :D
