Rebuilding without updating

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Rebuilding without updating

I have an ancient system, built in 2008, which is in use by a customer for a specific set of functions. It is a little tricky to set up, but it works.

The hard drive died a messy death. With the aid of ddrescue and a new hard drive I have most files restored, but kde 3.5 won't start. I would like to rebuild my binaries. Regrettably, a moderately recent emerge --sync has been done, so an ordinary emerge world will update practically every package on the system. Once I start on rebuilding, it will take forever, because the setup uses facilities which are no longer supported in the same way. The customer would like his system back Real Soon Now.

Is there any way to persuade emerge to rebuild all the packages as installed, without attempting to update them? There seems to be no switch for this.

Perhaps somewhere on some mirror there lives a portage-tree snapshot, silently waiting for you.

Even if there is, it may be hard to find the sources for all packages.

I think mark_alec has the rights of it. I'm just going to have to bite on the bullet and update. It may be fastest to simply re-install a new system, then emerge -u world.
