Please explain the meaning of and resolution for this warning.

Code: Select all

WARNING: One or more updates have been skipped due to a dependency conflict:

x11-base/xorg-server:0

  (x11-base/xorg-server-1.11.1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with
    <x11-base/xorg-server-1.10.99 required by (x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-285.05.09::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

net-libs/xulrunner:1.9

  (net-libs/xulrunner-2.0.1-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) conflicts with
    =net-libs/xulrunner-1.9* required by (dev-java/swt-3.5.2::gentoo, installed)

Soon I hope to be able to troubleshoot these things myself, but need to ask the first time I run into them.
Thanks

The first one means that because you use nvidia-drivers, xorg-server won't be updated (as the newest version is incompatible with nvidia drivers).

The second one means that xulrunner-2 won't be installed as swt requires 1.9.

The preserved library feature is intended to avoid major system breakage related to switching to new shared libraries. It is not intended to address programs which are only compatible with an old version. There is insufficient information for Portage to determine whether preserving the old libraries would be sufficient. It could be the case that swt requires the ability to run a program from the old package version. I doubt that applies here, but the dependency language cannot express it, so Portage must use the current behavior to be safe.

preserve-libs is a hack to keep your system working until you get around to rebuild the packages that still need the old library. It's not a long term solution.
