linux 3.0 Kernel?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

The 3.0 kernel is in portage, but all versions are current marked ~arch unstable. If you want to emerge them anyway do this:

Code: Select all

echo "sys-kernel/gentoo-sources" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge gentoo-sources

I assume you use stable - the 3.0 kernel is currently in testing. Generally, stable kernels are a version behind, so after 3.1 comes out, 3.0 will become available for you.

Personally, I run stable except for a handful of packages that I maintain in my package.keywords file. Others do run a full unstable system, which you can do by adding ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" in your /etc/make.conf (replace the x86 with your arch).

I don't like things breaking often, which is why I run stable, unless I'm dying to test something out, or it just seems like the type of package that will remain unstable for an eternity. If you do run ~arch, expect things to break since you are essentially testing integration of packages as soon as upstream releases them. Once packages are generally guaranteed to build and not crash by the Gentoo devs they end up marked as stable.
