LG DVD-RAM GSA-H55L incompatible with pktcdvd driver?

Hello,

Can anyone else with the LG DVD-RAM GSA-H55L confirm the following phenomena:

1) formatting of media works, using /dev/sr0 (it's a SATA drive).
2) creating the packet device with pktsetup or the pktcdvd init script works
3) creating or mounting the filesystem on the packet device (e.g. /dev/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0) always fails
4) writing or reading anything to the packet device always fails
5) formatting media under windows on the same computer works
6) performing (5), then trying to handle the formatted disc under Linux via the packet driver, also always fails

Taken, for example, a standard Medion CD-RW (700Mb, 4–12×):

Code: Select all

diederik@Californium ~ $ cdrwtool -i -d/dev/sr0
using device /dev/sr0
1088KB internal buffer
setting write speed to 12x

DISC INFO:
	erasable : Yes
	border = 3
	Disc status = 2
	number of first track = 1
	number of sessions = 1
	number of tracks = 1
	status of last track = 1
	uru = 0
	did_v = 1
	dbc_v = 0
	disc type = 0
	disc_id = 191577
	lead_in = 255:255:255 (1166880)
	lead_out = 255:255:255 (1166880)
	OPC entries = 0

TRACK INFO:

Track 1
	track_number = 1
	session_number = 1
	damage = 0
	copy = 0
	track_mode = 5
	Rt = 1
	blank = 0
	packet = 1
	fp = 1
	data_mode = 1
	lra_v = 0
	nwa_v = 0
	track_start = 0
	next_writable = 295232
	last_recorded = 0
	free_blocks = 0
	packet_size = 32
	track_size = 295232 (590464KB)
can't unlock door
Furthermore, trying to mount results in:

Code: Select all

Californium diederik # mount /dev/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0 /mnt/cdrom/
mount: /dev/pktcdvd/pktcdvd0: can't read superblock

Code: Select all

Californium diederik # dmesg | tail -n 5

pktcdvd: Fixed packets, 32 blocks, Mode-1 disc
pktcdvd: Max. media speed: 10
pktcdvd: write speed 0x
pktcdvd: bb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - sense 05.00.00 (Illegal request)
pktcdvd: pktcdvd0 couldn't set write speed
This specific error appears everywhere on the net, but I never managed to find a solution for it.

Code: Select all

Californium diederik # uname -a
Linux Californium 2.6.39-gentoo-r3 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Aug 9 13:37:09 CEST 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 FX-60 Dual Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

Californium diederik # zgrep -i CDR /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD=m
CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_BUFFERS=8
# CONFIG_CDROM_PKTCDVD_WCACHE is not set

I'm going to try the same things with an old hp 9300 CD writer.

Tested media:
  • Medion CD-RW 700Mb 4–12×
  • TDK DVD+RW 4.7Gb 1–4×
EDIT: slip of the keyboard: it's a PATA drive.

OK, although being a PATA drive, I cannot set or get the DMA mode:

Code: Select all

Californium ~ # hdparm -d /dev/sr0

/dev/sr0:
 HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I tried to connect the old HP CD-Writer. It doesn't understand the CD-RW media I'm using, BUT I was able to mount the filesystem via the packet driver.
(Writing doesn't work but OK, it's a very old writer).
