xdm starts but imediatly returns to login window after login

You have not rightly configured the graphics driver so, after the loggin, the wm (than require graphics acceleration) crash IMHO.

Refine the configuration in order to have the acceleration active (forget to use eselect, kernel module not loaded etc.)
