Installing VMware-server, vmware-modules fails

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Installing VMware-server, vmware-modules fails

I'm working to set up a gentoo box for some dev work on VMware VMs. (take a snapshot from ESX, fire up in VMware Server, test stuff without production risk)

I've been having some roadblocks that I've gotten around, but this one I can't fix. vmware-modules fails every time I've tried to emerge it. Initially I had a block between player and server, although I didn't want player (this was caused by the use flag vmware-tools in make.conf). Then I was getting a similar build error to the one below, so I did an "emerge -eauvDN vmware-server", which brings us to where we are now.

Portage tells me to get a bunch of info before asking for support so here it is:

Code: Select all

[ebuild N ] app-emulation/vmware-modules-208.2
The build log is huge, so pastebin is appropriate

I can post the environment file if necessary.

I noticed a few things in the build log: something about cross-compiling. There shouldn't be any cross compiling, aside from the inherent (if any) need for 32-bit libs on an x86_64 system. There's a lot of complaining about _MSC_VER not being defined.

EDIT: Looks like vmware-modules doesn't like the 2.6.39 kernel. I'm compiling a 2.6.38-r6 kernel now and will try after booting to it.

I use 2.6.39 kernel and vmware-modules-238.4-r1 from vmware overlay with 2.6.39 kernel patch.
Good works.

VMWare packages have been poorly maintained in the portage tree ever since VirtualBox became available. You need to use the vmware overlay to get it to work. Here is one documentation on how to use overlays:

vmware overlay it is then!

Man, that was a headache.

I'll report back if I have issues...
