Need assistance installing X11

  • Quote

Post by brent7890 » Thu Jul 14, 2011 3:18 am

I've just yesterday successfully installed Gentoo on my labtop Lenovo Thinkpad R61. I was able to connect through ethernet, and the verbose boot prompt displayed an [OK] next to everything, nothing erroneous. I'm having trouble installing X11, and running startx. I recieve errors:

Fatal server error: no screens found
Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
No drivers available.

I've been following the guide: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

I went into the directory /usr/src/linux and ran make menuconfig enabling all the necessary specifications entailed in the list.

My drivers, using the Debian Device Driver tool, my results are as follows:
80862a02 Yes Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) i915 v2.6.32-
80862a03 Yes Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) intel

Here's the options I selected in make menuconfig:

Device Drivers --->
Input device support --->
<*> Event interface

Device Drivers --->
Graphics support --->
Support for frame buffer devices --->
(Disable all drivers, including VGA, Intel, nVidia, and ATI)

(Further down, enable basic console support. KMS uses this.)
Console display driver support --->
<*> Framebuffer Console Support

Device Drivers --->
Graphics support --->
/dev/agpgart (AGP Support) --->
<*> Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support
Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support) --->
<*> Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G (i915 driver)
i915 driver
[*] Enable modesetting on intel by default

I saved the kernel configuration file, and typed in the command:
make

I configured the make.conf file and added the variables:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
VIDEO_CARDS="intel"

The remaining commands:
emerge -pv xorg-drivers (adding what was necessary to make.conf)
echo "x11-base/xorg-server udev" >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge xorg-server
env-update
source /etc/profile

FINALLY, I ran:
startx

Then I recieved the error messages I posted above, it explains it cannot locate the modules, yet I've followed the directions very closely, and I doubt configuring Xorg will make much a difference if it does not detect any of the devices. What am I missing? It explained to modify the files in:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

I do not have this directory in my instillation, if that helps anything. I started reading the example X config file, and I'm really confused, it's a lot of material to go through and I have the least idea when it comes to any of it. I guess I'm trying to save myself from unnecessary work and confusion, if someone could provide a direct explanation or fix, I'd be very thankful. I'm ready to provide anymore necessary info, thanks to anyone reading this post.

Did you install the kernel image and modules after you've built it?
Did you re-merge xorg-drivers after you've made the changes in make.conf?

I did re-emerge xorg, several times actually, I'm not sure if emerge re-writes it, or installs another one, but I'm pretty sure it re-writes, since the process was much shorter in comparison. Let me give you lspci:

As for re-installing the kernel, no, I have kept the same kernel source. All I did after I changed the /usr/src/linux file was make it, and I thought that's all I had to do, correct me if I'm wrong. As for modules, I don't have any, period. No modules. I thought the kernel was supposed to take care of the drivers that start at boot..... which means.... maybe I ought to reboot. Hold that thought.

Rebooting has proved to be unsuccessful. I know there's something simple I'm missing here, wish I knew what it was.

After building the kernel, with executing a 'make' command inside /usr/src/linux, you have to execute 'make modules_install' too. This will copy those modules into /lib/modules/something.

You need then to copy/move the build kernel from /usr/src/linux/arch/x86/boot/bzImage (most likely) to /boot/kernel (or something). The name of the kernel is your choice but should be consistent with the name mentioned in your /boot/grub/grub.conf file (the kernel someName..... stuff)

Then you may have to rebuild all packages that provide kernel-modules on their own (nvidia-drivers in my case, but not yours).

And after doing all that you should be able to reboot ;)

Greets,
Elbar

PS: You may need to mount your /boot partition first

For kernel:
After you installed/emerged the kernel sources (eg:gentoo-sources), you have to:
make - builds the kernel image and modules
make install - installs kernel image (vmlinuz) in /boot
make modules_install - installs modules in /lib/modules

After you installed the kernel image (vmlinuz) you have to add the new image to bootloader config file.

Code: Select all

eselect kernel list
ls /boot
ls /lib/modules
For X:
After you modified make.conf:

Code: Select all

emerge -1avuDN xorg-server

I did as you specified, yet I regretfully announce that the situation has not been resolved. I believe the boot partition mounts through grub during boot. Thanks for your input, I'll address more after I respond to the other poster.

I followed your steps but do not think I successfully performed the last: emerge -1avuDN

From what I can see, it provides a list of different options for configuring use variables under specific versions of x-org. I believe I have issued a similar command, which is this: emerge -pv xorg-drivers

I did some modifications, however, along with rebooting, making the kernel, make installing the kernel and modules, copying the /boot file and replacing it over the current one that's specified in grub, emerging xorg-server, env-update, source /etc/profile, starting x (and failing), and finally, rebooting again and failing to start x.

Either way, I want to in any form, express my gratitude and how thankful I am to your support, you guys are really helpful and enjoy this organization and operating system thus far, really great job!

I believe the problem lies here, some kind of simple mistake I am making, or a step I am forgetting, maybe it's time to set it aside and read numerous wiki's and websites to get a stronger understanding of the properties I'm trying to work and utilize. Here's the problem, I'll post it again for easy reference:

(EE) Failed to load module "intel" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Seems like this error would be simple enough to figure out. If this is perhaps too general or too limited of an explanation to diagnose an error, please tell me what I other information I can provide to resolve this issue.

Thanks a lot guys.

Check the output of

Code: Select all

emerge -pv x11-base/xorg-drivers
Is the intel flag active in the VIDEO_CARDS thingy?

If you mean VIDEO_CARDS="intel" (Exact syntax is practiced in /etc/make.conf), then yes. If I am supposed to try VIDEO_CARDS="i915" then I'll say that it didn't work, I tried it. It may be under another name, for the specific driver, and if it is, then that ought to be changed. For the moment, however, VIDEO_CARDS="intel" is what's under /etc/make.conf

Are the any warnings about incompatible ABI in the log ?
Mind putting the whole thing in a pastebin ?

Brent,

Have you seen this: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-88 ... ight-.html , it looks similar to what you have.

Also, I suggest you use wgetpaste to send us your posts, it makes forums' threads easier to read ;-)

You didn't install the intel X11 driver:

Code: Select all

ebuild N ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.14.0 USE="dri" 908 kB
Do:

Code: Select all

emerge -1uDN xorg-server
Let it finish, then try to start X again.
