Welcome to the Gentoo!

FYI: Gentoo does not have versions :).

Just install it in accordance with the handbook.

If you are going to do that, you should look at the LiveDVD, whose .iso can be loaded onto a thumb drive.

By the by, for someone doing their first gentoo install, on reasonably modern hardware you may be looking at a day or two. Not so painful. It will require reading, following instructions, and asking questions when you get stuck, but following that track 1-2 days isn't unreasonable.

Yes, it is possible but it is better to install to HDD first, update, fine tune it and install your customized system to a pendrive.

It is a bad idea to compile something in a pendrive - you'll kill it fast! :)

BTW: If you just need a working Linux/Gentoo system - look at http://www.sysresccd.org/Sysresccd-manu ... _USB-stick - it is Gentoo based and have a lot of useful things.

I second SystemRescueCd. I use it for months now on an USB stick to boot for maintenance when needed.
