Smartphone question

  • Quote

Post by Martux » Sat Apr 30, 2011 7:19 pm

Hello!
I am planning to buy a smartphone and found the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 to be a nice device.
Question: How well does this play with Gentoo and KDE?
Can I sync it with Kadressbook and Korganizer?
If not, can you advise a good smartphone which plays nice with Linux?
Thanks in advance,

Marcus

Does no one own that or a similar device and can report from his experiences?

After probing much for me the best solution was to run zarafa and sync via z-push / exchange on android. Mails and Contacts and Termins ar all handled over web...
and no google sync.

Android syncs contact information via the web (Google/Gmail contacts), which Akonadi can sync with the kde-misc/akonadi-googledata resource.

Akonadi-googledata is supposed to sync Google Contacts and Google Calendar, but I've had lots of problems with it. The akonadi-googledata-1.2.0 that's in portage crashed all the time, so I'm using the live ebuild from the KDE overlay. Calendar syncing is barely functional (No recurring events currently) but the contact sync seems to work well. I'm not sure it's still being developed though.

I've been using this with my HTC Desire and I'm happy with it.

I got one of these recently. Great hardware, terrible software, IMHO. Not to worry it's many shortcomings have been fixed, and I'm now very happy with it.

In any case you will likely want to get hold of this cross platform firmware flashing software: http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
Well, I was hoping for a bit more native integration in KDEs Kalendar system.
Does anyone use Opera as a browser there? Is it nicely syncable with a desktop version?
There doesn't seem to be any better choice than Android, I guess?
