Since that looks like pam_ck_connector.so was never used it's propably one of those.

I have followed this guide more or less. I have KDE-4.6 installed and auto mount works without a problem for a variety of drivers. What does not work is the following:

- No suspend
- No shutdown (seriously) - hangs at remounting root read/write

I don't know whether the above two problems have anything to do with the removal of hal or not, but I did not notice them before (or so I very strongly think).

However, the parts of the guide I did not follow:

- Install gnome-base/gvfs (why do I need this on a KDE system?)
- CONFIG_IDE ( ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED) ---> Why do I need this?)

So, are my current problems (no suspend, no shutdown) hal removal related?

Which kernel version do you have right now ?

One of my friend doesn't have any shutdown problem with kernel 2.6.36 but with 2.6.37 it hangs badly.

2.6.37-zen+

Built straight from git.
EDIT: I will try with zen-2.6.36 and see how that works. Will report back in the morning, compiling libreoffice for now.

EDIT II: All problems solved on reverting to 2.6.36.

Since you mention shutdown, I've noticed a quirk there too. When I use my power button to shutdown directly (the default action when on battery), it takes 5-10 seconds for the KDE desktop to come down. However, when I right-click the desktop and use the "Leave..." menu, it's as fast as normal. What's that about?

Also, while we're on PowerDevil, I noticed the Configuration button in the applet doesn't work, though I've no problem accessing the config through systemsettings. Odd...

Hi,

Since hal has been unmerged, battery meter (powered by solid under kde) doesn't detect any battery, same for processors.

Battery info is available in /proc:

Code: Select all

# cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info
present:                 yes
design capacity:         3800 mAh
last full capacity:      2054 mAh
battery technology:      rechargeable
design voltage:          11100 mV
design capacity warning: 380 mAh
design capacity low:     115 mAh
cycle count:              0
capacity granularity 1:  38 mAh
capacity granularity 2:  38 mAh
model number:            DELL JG1688
serial number:           1006
battery type:            LION
OEM info:                Sanyo
We have this bug for solid: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=348236

Any idea how to make solid work without hal?

rahulthewall,
solid-hardware reports unknown service as below:

Code: Select all

$ solid-hardware query 'Is Battery'
QStringList Solid::Backends::Hal::HalManager::findDeviceByDeviceInterface(const Solid::DeviceInterface::Type&)  error:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown"
What does it say for you?

upower -d works fine.
I recompiled solid but that didn't help, there might be another package to recompile but I have no idea which one.
This battery meter issue happens with 2 laptops.

It might be obvious for many people but was not for me. Unmerging hal is only valid for KDE4.6 and later, see: http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67 ... 39#p189739

Hi,

I tried to follow this guide, but have problem. Especially, after I say no for CONFIG_IDE in kernel configuration and compiled it, it wasnt possible boot into it (kernel panic):

I am back in old kernel. Thanks for advice.

radfoj,

I had the same on a remote computer (which is actually my mother's computer).

You probably have to enable SATA support in your kernel Device Drivers/<*> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers.

If your drives were named HDA they will be renamed SDA, then you'll also need to update /etc/fstab.

Hello, i also have the logout/shutdown/etc problem.
I followed the guide, plus some other stuff recommended such as the kernel-2.6.32-thing.

In /var/log/kdm.log i found this:
klauncher(2808) kdemain: No DBUS session-bus found. Check if you have started the DBUS server.
kdeinit4: Communication error with launcher. Exiting!
not sure if it's relevant.

Any ideas are welcomed.
Thanks.

edit:
after some searching, i found out that this maybe related with the issues i`m having with the sound.
i report more when i done with my work.

edit2:
login/logout and related are fixed. i had to disable the kde sounds...

kdm, suspend, mount not working

I've followed the guide as posted on the first page.
When I start KDM (4.6) with "/etc/init.d/xdm start" KDM comes up and I can login.
KDE starts loading (and displaying the 5 icons), but when it hits the 4th icon (the plasma icon, or cashew) the screen goes black with only the 4th icon showing. If it manages to precede to load, I get nothing but a garbled KDE. For instance, when I open an application and close it again lines of the application stay on screen.
I've checked "/var/log/kdm.log" and "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", nothing obvious.
When I go to tty1, login there, and "/etc/init.d/xdm stop" then startx, KDE loads.

Consolekit is stated through it's init-script.

Session2:
        unix-user = '1000'
        realname = '(null)'
        seat = 'Seat1'
        session-type = ''
        active = FALSE
        x11-display = ''
        x11-display-device = ''
        display-device = '/dev/tty1'
        remote-host-name = ''
        is-local = TRUE
        on-since = '2011-02-23T09:16:18.208596Z'
        login-session-id = '2'
        idle-since-hint = '2011-02-23T19:00:58.999803Z'
The 'active' variable stays 'FALSE' either way (startx, /etc/init.d/xdm start).
I also cannot mount disks and suspend through the GUI.
I once got the 'active' variable set to 'TRUE' with "/etc/init.d/xdm start", suspend worked, but the GUI was garbled (as described above).

Hi!

After I followed the instructions my default language in gnome changed from German to English. Why doesn't Gentoo use the the default language anymore taht is defined in /etc/env.d/02locale?

/etc/env.d/02locale

Code: Select all

ANG="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_ALL="de_DE.UTF-8"
Another problem is the gnome menu is empty when I set these settings to /etc/slim.conf:

Code: Select all

login_cmd       exec ck-launch-session gnome-session
If I leave it to

Code: Select all

login_cmd           exec /bin/bash -login /usr/share/slim/Xsession %session
everything is ok but I don't have a shutdown button.

Any suggestions?

XDG_MENU_PREFIX="gnome-"
is probably not being passed on

try adding it to your .bash_profile/.profile script (and export the variable)

.bash_profile:

Code: Select all

# /etc/skel/.bash_profile

# This file is sourced by bash for login shells. The following line
# runs your .bashrc and is recommended by the bash info pages.
[[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc
export XDG_MENU_PREFIX="gnome-"
Sorry that didn't solve the problem.

I didn't say put it in the system directory,
if you put it there I'm not sure it gets updated without env-update/etc-update or a system bounce,
it's always preferable to put it in ~/.bash_profile and re-login

what does "ls .config/menus/ /etc/xdg/menus/" return
what does "cat ~/.bash_profile" return
what does "grep XDG /etc/env.d/*" return
