vlc blows on opening a file

$ vlc

Vlc stays in touch on opening any other medium be it dvd or capture device.
This behaviour is new since the upgrade to kde-4.6 without hal.

Could someone help please?

With the update I ran into this problem too. I read somewhere that the vlc guys blame qt for it.

I Just installed vlc as follows:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="**" emerge =vlc-1.1.9999

The result works fine for me. It claims to be vlc-1.1.8 .

This does not work here. It fetches the git repository from videolan server
and unmasking in package.keywords doesn´t work either.
It seems as if portage completely ignores the entry in package.keywords.

For me it did fetch the git repository from the videolan server,
but then it went ahead and compiled and installed version 1.1.8, which it presumably got from the git.

I have a similar problem now, vlc is not segfaulting, but does only play sound.

Is this happening you click open? When I upgraded to kde 4.6 vlc started crashing every time I used the open dialog. I read in several forums that the problem won't be solved without changes to some or all of kdelibs, qt, and vlc. Does it work if you open a file from a shell?

The only qt trouble re the extension module. vlc can play music but most of its sub-menus mess around and don't work, which may ke kde or vlc; can't tell.

That´s it exactly.
VLC plays music just fine, also movies etc.
It ONLY segfaults on doing File --> Open... out of VLC itself.
It does NOT crash when opening media (say dvd) and capture device
( e.g. webcam) out of VLC itself.
It also does not fold when opening an mp3 music file out of - say -
dolphin, meaning right-click on *.mp3 - open with - vlc.

Hi guys,

Sorry to pop up this old thread. Does anyone have solved this issue? I have same issue no matter I open a file from the terminal or from the open file dialog.

I have pretty sure the font it is trying to load exist, and other applications, like the text editors, can use it.
