console and gnome-terminal show

Code: Select all

$locale charmap
UTF-8
Also my locale settings are

Code: Select all

$locale
LANG=en_US.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
LC_ALL=
however, if I launch gnome-terminal it uses ansiX3.4-1968 as default. What is going on?

I'm not sure we have the same problem, my locale is set to be UTF-8 and locale charmap shows so, gnome-terminal uses a different one. In your case it seems that gnome-terminal uses the locale you have set up!

I also have the option to change to UTF-8 on gnome-terminal, but everytime I close the terminal and execute it again it goes to ANSI_X3.4-1968..

My locale:

Code: Select all

 $ locale
LANG=C
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_PAPER="C"
LC_NAME="C"
LC_ADDRESS="C"
LC_TELEPHONE="C"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="C"
LC_ALL=C
My locale -a:

Code: Select all

$ locale -a
C
POSIX
en_US
en_US.iso88591
en_US.utf8
portuguese
pt_PT
pt_PT.iso88591
pt_PT.iso885915@euro
pt_PT.utf8@euro
pt_PT@euro
I don't want to change to UTF-8 everytime I execute gnome-terminal, I want to put it default :S

Best Regards

Your /etc/locale.gen must have a silly entry - the purpose of '@euro' was to indicate latin1 to latin15 change
(see wiki). Makes no sense for utf8.

Most common solution is either /etc/env.d/02locale with LANG or similar in your user startup shell file.
First is required for xdm as system service.

Hello VoidMage,

Thanks for your reply. I have corrected that now ;).

Well I solved for now my problem by switching the locale on GDM.

Thanks you guys :D

Thanks for the xdm remark, I'm confused though as to why this is a system issue. If different users want to have different locales is the statement that they can't have gnome-terminal's default to their ~/profile's locale?

xdm service is started by root, so whatever is run directly from it inherits its environment.
