[SOLVED] No /dev/sda?

  • Quote

Post by pgu » Mon Dec 06, 2010 8:54 am

I just installed Gentoo, but I don't get a /dev/sda and can't mount my /boot partition.

Code: Select all

# MAKEDEV sda
# ls -l /dev/sd*
ls: cannot access /dev/sd*: No such file or directory
# df .
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda3 62935112 2512924 57225256 5% /
dmesg shows

Any idea?

Have you tried passing rootfstype=ext4 argument to the kernel?

I did the MAKEDEV in the wrong location. If I do MAKEDEV sda I get the devices and can mount my filesystem.

What's the current state of udev?
udev: starting version 151

Some posts claim that this is too old, but that's the version I got with my installation and after emerge --update world.

# lspci | grep -i sata
00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HR/HO/HH (ICH8R/DO/DH) 6 port SATA AHCI Controller (rev 02)
03:00.0 SATA controller: JMicron Technology Corp. 20360/20363 Serial ATA Controller (rev 02)
Both controllers are configured in AHCI mode.

I can't mount /boot and it can't do swapon during boot.

Should I re-install without ext4?

Why are you using MAKEDEV ? (spelled makedev here) The kernel and udev handle devices in the default, by the handbook, install.

Likely problem is kernel configuration.
The sections of menuconfig that handle hard drive adapter drivers and file systems should look like:

You need scsi stuff to provide "transport"

If you are getting a kernel panic take a picture and post it on a free photo site.

I was using MAKEDEV since the devices were not created by udev. There is no makedev on my system:

Code: Select all

(chroot) livecd linux # type MAKEDEV
MAKEDEV is /usr/sbin/MAKEDEV
(chroot) livecd linux # type makedev
bash: type: makedev: not found
DONAHUE wrote: Likely problem is kernel configuration.
I agree as I can boot fine using the kernel on the USB memory stick.

Thank you for the list. As far as I can see I have the options as you have specified. Earlier I did not have the PATA settings, which I have changed. I have also changed from ext4 back to ext3 (to rule out any ext4 problems). But now I get:

Code: Select all

fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda3
/dev/sda3:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
...
The partition is fine as I can mount it from the USB memory stick kernel.
Here's a egrep SCSI\|ATA\|IDE\|EXT from my .config file:

Also, if I type the root password and type "df" I see that /dev/sda3 is mounted on /.

I then removed the fsck (0 in the last column) from /etc/fstab and I'm where I started (but this time using ext3 rather than ext4): the system boots, but there is no /dev/sd* and I have to use MAKEDEV prior to mount /boot.

It was related to: udev and CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED..

Code: Select all

< # CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2 is not set

> CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2=y

Hi
i also just installed gentoo (2.6.36-gentoo-r5)
but when i rebooted it, i got an error message

Code: Select all

CHECKING ROOT FILESYSTEM...

fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda3

/dev/sda3:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:

e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

* filesystem could not be fixed :(
But when i booted again with the livecd, i saw that fsck.ext3 does exist (in /sbin on /dev/sda3)

Here's my fstab:

Code: Select all

# <fs> <mountpoint> <type> <opts> <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/sda3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
#/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto 0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
# use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec 0 0
I checked with df -T and /dev/sda3 really is ext3:

Code: Select all

livecd ~ # mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/gentoo/
livecd ~ # df -T
Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
tmpfs tmpfs 12344588 29588 12315000 1% /
/dev/sr0 iso9660 116744 116744 0 100% /mnt/cdrom
/dev/loop0
          squashfs 86784 86784 0 100% /mnt/livecd
udev tmpfs 10240 216 10024 3% /dev
tmpfs tmpfs 12344588 6152 12338436 1% /mnt/livecd/lib64/firmware
tmpfs tmpfs 12344588 0 12344588 0% /mnt/livecd/usr/portage
/dev/sda3 ext3 122509844 2683280 113603388 3% /mnt/gentoo
When i run e2fsck as suggested in the error message, i get almost the same error message as before:

Code: Select all

livecd ~ # e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sda3
e2fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda3

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
... why does it think /dev/sda3 is ext2?

Actually, after i had this error, i completely reinstalled gentopo again, (deleting and then creating all the partitions new)
but after installation the same error happened.

Code: Select all

livecd ~ # uname -a
Linux livecd 2.6.31-gentoo-r10 #1 SMP Thu Apr 8 13:09:43 UTC 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU X 980 @ 3.33GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

If /dev/sda3 is not created and

Code: Select all

grep CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED /usr/src/linux/.config
gives

Code: Select all

CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED=y
CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2=y
You have the same problem as I did. Uncomment the options and rebuild your kernel.

Thanks - that

Code: Select all

CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED=y
CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED_V2=y
was indeed the cause.

I wonder why these options are enabled by default?

Thanks You

Gentoo doesn't need devfs!!! As the kernel says its deprecated. Now everything uses udev. I just built a system myself and while running through the kernel config I turned off in Filesystems Dnotify and Inotify support. Make sure they are both on! udev uses those to create the dev nodes. That fixes the problem!

That might be, but the above mentioned two options causes udev to fail, everything else being the same.
