I have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics card:
50: PCI 300.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA)
[Created at pci.318]
Unique ID: svHJ.xGZuq2eX1y1

Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: nvidia is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe nvidia"
Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
Attached to: #20 (PCI bridge)
I enabled the vdpau USE flag and then ran
emerge -puD --newuse world
which successfully recompiled the relevant packages. However, when using kmplayer to play a video file I am not getting any video output...ie just a blank screen. The console shows this:
MPlayer SVN-r32624-4.4.5 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
Terminal type `unknown' is not defined.

I tried using VLC, but I can't seem to find the option to switch it to VDPAU.

Using the following versions:
[ebuild R ] media-video/vlc-1.1.5 USE="X a52 aac alsa cdda dbus dts dvd ffmpeg flac gcrypt gnutls kde libnotify mmx mp3 mpeg ncurses nsplugin ogg opengl png qt4 sdl sqlite sse svg truetype vaapi vorbis x264 xcb xml xv -aalib (-altivec) -atmo -avahi -bidi -cddb -dc1394 -debug -dirac -directfb -dvb -fbcon -fluidsynth -fontconfig -ggi -gme -gnome -httpd -id3tag -ieee1394 -jack -kate -libass -libcaca -libproxy -libtiger -libv4l -libv4l2 -lirc -live -lua -matroska -modplug -mtp -musepack -optimisememory -oss -projectm -pulseaudio -pvr -remoteosd -rtsp -run-as-root -samba -schroedinger -sdl-image -shine -shout -skins -speex -stream (-svga) -taglib -theora -twolame -udev -upnp -v4l -v4l2 -vcdx -vlm (-win32codecs) -wma-fixed -xosd -zvbi" 0 kB

also switching to VDPAU in mythtv gives the following output:

Surely its not because my Video card is not VDPAU compatible? Are there any tests or applications I can use to confirm it is working? Might it have something to do with my system being x64??

Your on the right track for certain because vdpau worked with my older e8200 core 2 intel and BFG 275GTX running amd64 arch just fine.
it's been some time since I monkied around with vdpau however if i recall correctly I needed to specify the -o vdpau target for mplayer for it to work or mplayer would fallback to cpu rendering. I would suggest forcing emerge to dig a bit deeper to ensure your use flag changes have been applied system wide by running

Code: Select all

emerge -uDNpv world
D for deep check and N will check for global useflag changes

something else to keep in mind as well is even if you do have a core I7 processor MAKEOPTS="-j9" would appear to be proper however high parallel gcc compiled building code can potentially cause system inconsistencies from packages failing to build sanely or in an order defined by the makefiles resulting in binary link errors.

The other thing that concerns me is this

Code: Select all

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64"
In part I can take some heat for gentoo users having picked up this habit half a decade ago
Portage in earlier renditions didn't support per package unmasking so if you wanted the gloves to come off you were stuck with bare fists however since this because reality I've since quit the habit in an attempt to keep what remains of the receeding hairline it caused from running on the bleeding edge :D

I used to do the same thing with accepting unstable keywords globally instead of unmasking packages with package.keywords on a per package as needed basis which realistically places unfair pressure on the dev's to solve bugs for unstable code. this also has unpredictable effects on system stability or reliability if your after assistance trying to fix an issue with something. Video codecs with a full unmasked system can be very unpredictable.

try that in the sticky, works for me :) at least under mplayer

hmmm looks like it's amateur hour on my part.

i ran mplayer from the console and notice i was getting permission denied to /dev/nvidia0

having just rebuilt this box from scratch a few weeks back i forgot to my user account to the video group

all good now, vdpau goodness is now working, sorry for wasting your time

thanks guys 8)
