VLC 1.1.4 MKV Problem/Bug [Solved]

Hello,

VLC 1.1.4 on my amd64 system fails with a few varying errors when trying to transcode 1080p MKV files, though it fails before any transcoding takes place.
VLC 1.0.6 works to a degree, and as such it lacks functionality I want. I'm wondering why 1.1.4 fails and if this is a common/known problem.

I have recompiled VLC many times, and I even tried to use the 9999 ebuild, but it failed on compile with a known bug. I also rebuilt world once, and I have tried to use different codecs in the commandline to transcode the video. It seems like 1.1.4 and these video files just aren't compatible. I should note that other MKV files work fine with 1.1.4, it's just these 1080p ones, with AVC/MPEG4 video and AAC 6 channel audio.

Thank you for your reply, but I honestly would prefer answers related to VLC. I am using ffmpeg for other files, but it does not do well with the subtitles in the MKV files I'm trying to get VLC 1.1.4 to handle. I have been unable to get desirable results from mencoder as well, hence my attempt with VLC.

It seems to be related to the amount of audio channels, the files that fail are all 1080p MKV with 6 channels. I have found that 1080p MKV with 2 audio channels does not cause VLC to crash/bug. The audio/video codecs in both cases are identical.

I found a workaround/solution or the cause of the problem if you will. In my commandline I had used "channels=2", changing it to "channels=6" stops VLC from crashing when opening the 1080p files with 6 AAC audio channels. Whether it is supposed to be like this or not, I do not know.

They are of the "Advanced Sub Station Alpha" type, or "ASS" if you will.
