What is the reason that FreeCAD is no longer supported?

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

I noticed that FreeCAD used to be in portage, but is no longer there. Does anyone happen to know the reason that it was taken out?

Also, what I am really after is the best open source CAD program for 3d work and solid modeling.

Thanks for any help that you can give me.

Did you google "linux cad software" ?
Very enlightening.
Gerard.
To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo, has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

Google's a wonderful thing, but it is not showing me the reason that FreeCAD was removed from portage. It seemed like someone closer to Gentoo might know.

I don't think FreeCAD has ever been in Portage, see:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=291161

It's still in bugzilla, waiting for inclusion as new package.

Thanks, the reason that I thought so was:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-80 ... art-0.html

but I'll take a close look at the ebuild that resides there.

Thanks very much.

Sorry Gerard,

I interpreted that as a let-me-google-that-for-you comment, and so I apologize. I have indeed searched google for linux cad and open source. What I was hoping for was someone who had first hand knowledge of something that they use, like and had gotten to work with Gentoo.

I thank you for your reply.

@artbody

You need to locate the file XercesMessages_en_US.cat from package xerces-c (mine is in /usr/share/xerces-c/msg/ ) and then copy it in the current directory and start FreeCAD.

i.e. :

Code: Select all

cp /usr/share/xerces-c/msg/XercesMessages_en_US.cat .
FreeCAD
It seems that the file is needed only on the first run of FreeCAD, so you can delete the extra copy of XercesMessages_en_US.cat afterwards.

I suspect you can directly start FreeCAD from the directory in which such file is located.

Code: Select all

cd /usr/share/xerces-c/msg/
FreeCAD
Hope this helps you.
