Resetting video card

Due to bug 27612, X sometimes crashes, leaving my video card unusable. Is there a way to reset it, so I can restart X without rebooting? An [url=ttp://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27612]LKML post[/url] suggests the svgalib 'reset_vga' utility, but that wasn't installed with svgalib for some reason. Any suggestions? I'm using vanilla kernel 2.6.0-test9.
