Post by MikeG1 » Tue Aug 24, 2010 8:47 pm

Having some troubles with KDE install again :-(

Just did:
emerge kdebase-meta:4.4
Install went without any problems and I updated all config files!

When typing startx, i get the following error:

Code: Select all

hostname: Unknown host
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.14447

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: /usr/bin/X: No such file or directory
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: exec: /usr/bin/X: cannot execute: No such file or directory giving up.

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

here is some more info about my system:

emerge --info

Code: Select all

Execute the following as root:

Code: Select all

echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc
Does that help?

Best regards,
Jimini

Does starting via kdm work?
Try to set DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" in /etc/conf.d/xdm
and execute

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/xdm

Sorry, I didn't read carefully enough. Does the mentioned file exist?

Best regards,

/usr/bin/X belongs to x11-base/xorg-server, so you should (re)install that package.

Best regards,
Jimini

Ooops, haven't seen that one
Actually, install the 'xorg-x11' package (if you haven't already) rather than only xorg-server, so you get all the extra goodies and fonts.

OK THX :-)
The xorg-server wasn't installed.
I assumed that KDE installs everything needed for a window system.
I guess I was wrong :-)

Right now I'm configuring xorg according to: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

On a more general note:
Do I have everything needed for a gentoo Desktop system?
That includes:
- fresh gentoo system
- xorg-system installed
- kde installed
??

THX!
